(A/N: Welcome to chapter 3! We're still in Alvar's POV—but it'll switch to Lia's halfway through. 😁)

Alvar-ish POV:

This was it.

This was Alvar's second chance.

The one to prove that he wasn't a total screw-up.

After messing up so badly with Sophie, he was surprised that he'd been able to have this job again. However, there wasn't exactly any other option besides him. Out of everyone in the Neverseen's order, he'd been the only one fit to wander around the human cities. Any of the others might've been too obvious or suspicious. Humans may not've been considered smart among elves—but they weren't dumb. One wrong act and an elf's cover was blown.

As warned by the rest of the members, Alvar failing his mission again would have severe consequences. The last time he failed...Fintan, the leader of the Neverseen, had left him to burn in a room full of fire for days.

(A/N: Again, for those who do not know. Fintan is another elf in the Lost Cities. One of the most powerful, I'd say. He often claims the role of leader to the Neverseen. His special ability is the same as Lia's: to create and manipulate fire.)

This time, Alvar was sent to California to find a girl named Lia Roberts. She was sent among humans by the Neverseen themselves, and the time had come for her to be taken back to where she really belonged.

Unfortunately, according to the tracking parameters they had on her, Lia's location wasn't exact. It was only clear that she lived in the heart of San Francisco. This meant that Alvar once again had to pay close attention to hundreds of human girls—looking for clues that she was the one.

That morning, he was sent to spy on an 11-year-old, Auburn-haired, girl with sapphire blue eyes. She was wearing a red bookbag on her back, so it was most likely that she was going to school.

Normal looking girl. Normal looking activity. She seemed human enough—but Alvar was determined not to mess up again, so he lingered a bit longer.

Using his ability to vanish, he went invisible and started to trail her from afar. At one point, the girl passed a busy crossed intersection—and Alvar was caught behind by all of the people and cars. Once it finally cleared, the girl was far down the road—headed towards the path the lead to the local high school.

Wait—high school?! Alvar was no expert, but he was certain that girls her age were supposed to be in middle school.

She must've been a lot smarter than her peers—like an elf among humans would be. Interesting.

By the time Alvar arrived at the school, everything was quiet. The kids must've been in their own classes—and he had no idea which one the girl was in. Great.

He was still trying to figure out what to do next when suddenly, a loud bell rang. Seconds later, human teenagers rushing out of the rooms. It seemed that they were all heading to the cafeteria for lunch. Alvar looked closely at every one that passed by, but couldn't find the Auburn-haired girl among them.

Eventually, he gave up and went into the cafeteria where the rest of the students were. It was possible that he might've just missed her in the crowd. Making sure to remain invisible, he scanned the cafeteria in search of her—when suddenly...the door opened. And a young, Auburn-haired, girl with a red backpack steped in.

Her.

She looked around the room for a bit before ducking her head and making her way to an empty table. Alvar wasn't sure whether her sitting alone was important or not—but he took note of it anyway.
