Vivienne and I had now been married for two years- and we were going out to celebrate our anniversary.
Our anniversary landed on a Thursday night, and while I didn't have work, Vivienne did. Vivienne, however, worked from home.
After Vivienne graduated with her MBA, she got a job at a large fashion company as an Account Executive- and she was excelling at the job.
I wouldn't have expected anything less. It also took a lot for her mother to admit it, but she finally said that Vivienne made the right choice by getting her MBA and working in fashion rather than becoming a lawyer.
Vivienne and I owned a townhome that was close to my work. It had three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and Vivienne of course designed how each room would look, and we picked out all of the furniture together. The house had a very modern feel with touches of shabby chic, and it just felt like Vivienne and I. You walked into the house and you could tell that it was owned by us.
Vivienne and I rescued a black cat, named Raven (that's my cat's name in real life <3) and while I loved Raven, and I knew she loved me back- she was attached to Vivienne's hip. She slept next to her in a cat tree while she worked, and was always wanting to be around the both of us- but Vivienne even more so.
Of course life could be redundant. Work could get us frustrated and tired, and sometimes each day blended into the other. But I can honestly say that Vivienne went out of her way each and every day to try and make me feel appreciated, and special. And I tried my best to do the same for her, even if I had a difficult day.
Since getting married, there was a certain selfless aspect that Vivienne seemed to develop even more so. She had become more patient and understanding in situations. I believe it was just her maturing as well.
For our anniversary dinner, Vivienne put on a gorgeous red dress that clung to every curve of her body- and I wore a little black dress. When Vivienne saw me she smiled and said, "You look beautiful, Char."
"So do you, Viv." I said, giving her a smile back, "You know that I love you in red."
"I just love you, period." Vivienne said back to me.
She made us reservations for our anniversary at a very fancy Japanese restaurant that had just opened up about a half hour away from our home, and I drove us there.
When we were seated and we each had a drink by us, I brought up the topic that I knew was on mine and Vivienne's mind. A topic that we had been discussing more recently.
Adopting a child.
We both wanted children. However, we knew that we wanted to adopt. Vivienne did not want to be pregnant, and neither did I. Adoption felt like the right choice for us in terms of how we wanted to go about bringing a child into our life. Bringing a child in need of a loving home into ours was something we both wanted to do.
"I was looking up adoption agencies." I said to Vivienne, "Ones that are LGBTQ friendly."
Vivienne nodded and said, "I know those can sometimes be far and few. Did you have any luck? I have been looking up some during my downtime at work."
"I found a couple." I said, "Do you...want to really think about getting this process started? It can take a while, as you know."
Vivienne looked at me with a warm gaze and asked, "Do you?"
I nodded, feeling my heart skip a beat, "I do. I feel ready for this step. We've been married for two years. We have stable careers and a home...I think it's time."
"Good. I agree." Vivienne said, "Especially since Olivia had her son a couple of months ago, I know we've both had a bit of baby fever. I can't believe I am saying it, but I do feel ready to become a mother and get this process started. I want to grow our family."
