Mal's alarm blares at 7 AM the next morning and I fall out of bed with how much it scares me.
"Holy shit! Madi are you ok?" Mal asks when she realizes what happened. I let out a grunt in response.
"Y-ya, it-it j-just-st s-scar-red me."
She helps me up before laughing, "Oh my God that was so funny. Just wait until I tell the other girls. That's got to have been the best start to a first day at camp." I look down and blush. "Don't worry they'll think it's hilarious."
She walks over and grabs a fresh t-shirt and shorts. "You should probably change the training staff doesn't like it when we're late to breakfast, even on day one." I nod and also go to grab some fresh clothes.
Even though it's hot I grab a thin long sleeve shirt and thin sweatpants. 'If they see my scares they'll just think that I'm gross.' As soon as Mal walks out of the bathroom I go in and get ready for the day. When I come back out Tobin and Alex are waiting in our room talking with Mal.
"And it was so funny. I didn't even realize what had happened at first, but she was just on the floor right after a loud thud."
"Did you at least see if she was ok before you laughed at her?" Alex asked while Tobin was laughing herself.
"Of course I did!" Mal defended herself. I walk over and put my clothes back in the suitcase.
"Are you ok kid?" Tobin asks me trying to reign herself back in. I nod. "You two ready to go?" I nod again.
We head downstairs where there are many members of the team hanging out and eating breakfast. I spot Christen sitting with a couple of other girls eating breakfast. The four of us walk over and sit on the other side of the group.
"Hey Mads, sleep well?" I nod.
"She fell out of bed when the alarm went off this morning," Mal tells them. 'Great now the first thing that people know about me is that I'm an idiot.'
"What! Are you ok? Did you hurt yourself?"
"N-no. J-just-st sur-surpr-prised-sed." Christen let out a satisfied sigh turning to the group of girls that she was sitting with.
"Guys this is Madison, she's staying with Tobin and me. Madi this is Becky, Alyssa, and then you meet Kling and AD in Portland." I nod to them in greeting. "Come on, let's go get you some food." Christen stands and I follow her to a table with different fruits and meats for breakfast. Christen helps me fill up a plate before guiding me back to our table.
As I start eating I ignore the conversations going on around me in favor of thinking about what practice will be like today. A while later Christen gives me a little nudge and I notice that Coach has walked into the room and has started talking about the camp schedule. One of the staff members was coming around passing it out.
"We'll start with a team meeting at 10, lunch at 12:30, then load the buses and go over to the field for a field practice at 1:15. Dinner is at 5, another team meeting at six, and you all will have team bonding at eight. After breakfast, if you need new training gear, you know who you are, stop by the coach's meeting room to pick it up."
She pauses for a moment taking a breath, "One more thing before you guys we have one new member to the roster this camp. Madi, if you would stand up please." I look around and stand up slowly. I can feel everyone's eyes on me and I struggle with being the center of everybody's attention. "This is Madison, she's fifteen, and she plays in a more forward position. Alright, I'll leave you all to get ready for the day ahead. Meeting at 10." She leaves the room with the rest of the training staff.
