I don't even notice when Tobin gets in the car and could barely tell when the car started moving.
"Alright, Mads we're home let's get you upstairs ok?"
I don't nod. I can't move any part of my body. I flinch back slightly when I feel a hand on my shoulder. It's Tobin.
"I'm gonna pick you up and carry you inside. Is that ok?" I don't say anything but allow her to pick me up. I wrap my arms around the back of her neck and unconsciously place my head in its crook.
"Come on kid, let's get you inside." Christen holds the door open as Tobin carries me. 'This is nice. I hope she'll do this again.' I'm immediately appalled by the thought. 'No, don't get attached. You heard what they said: this is only until camp then I'm right back where I started.'
Tobin doesn't set me down on the bed but instead in the cozy corner of my closet.
"S-sorry," I mumble when she sets me down.
"What for?"
"R-ruining-g d-dinner-r."
"Madison, listen to me, you didn't ruin anything. Long ruined it by running her big mouth and saying things that aren't true. Got it."
I nod though I don't believe her. If I wasn't there then she wouldn't have said anything about me and they would still be enjoying time with their friends.
"Come get one of us if you need anything. We don't care what time it is." She leaves after that closing the closet door but leaving the main room door cracked.
I sighed and curled myself in the corner of the closet. I pulled my legs up to my chest and grabbed the blanket that Tobin and Christen had gotten me.
Christen's POV
"How's she doing?" I ask as Tobin comes down the stairs. She just shakes her head.
"She thinks it's her fault and that she ruined the dinner."
"And you told her that it wasn't right?"
"Obviously I did, but I don't think that she believed me. I also told her that she could come find us if she needed anything emphasizing that it didn't matter what time it was." Tobin tells me.
"Good. I'll go check on her in a little bit."
She nods, "Do you think that Allie's right?"
"About what?"
"About Madi having problems with the other girls on the team."
"I think that one or two others may have somewhat of the same view, but overall the girls will love her. There's no reason that they wouldn't. She is amazing at the sport, but she's also young and they'll understand everything that comes with that. Mal more than anyone else I think will be able to help her when we get to camp." I say more trying to convince myself that I'm right than Tobin.
"You're right, I'm just worried. I want her to have a good time at camp and not be worried about what everyone else is thinking."
"Do you think that we should still take her to the game tomorrow?"
"If she's up to it then ya, but she should probably go up to the family box instead of coming down to the locker room with us. She can hang out with AD's partner."
"Alright, I'm going to text AD. Do you want to put something on that's not The Lion King?"
"I suppose that I can do that." Tobin leaves the room and I head up to our bedroom. 'How could she say something like that? She doesn't even know Madi and she...' I ball my fist resisting the urge to punch something. Shaking, I take out my phone to text AD.
Chris:
Hey, would it be ok if Madi hangs out with Emily tomorrow during the game??
AD:
Of course! Is this about what happened earlier??
Chris:
Ya, I'm not even 100% sure that she wants to go anymore. But if she does I just don't want her to feel pressured to go down to the locker room if she doesn't feel comfortable with it.
AD:
Alright, that sounds good, Just let me know and I'll tell Emily what's going on.
AD:
Also, no one else from today feels the way that long does about Madison. We are all extremely excited to see what she can do on the pitch.
Chris:
Thanks AD that means a lot, to all of us.
I let out a sigh, "She's going to be fine. We are going to get to camp and everything is going to be fine. Everyone is going to love her. No one is going to be an asshole and if anyone dares to be Toby will kill them. Everything will be ok."
I head back downstairs snuggling into Tobin on the couch. I turn to Toby when the movie ends, "She's going to be ok right? Please tell me she's going to be ok!"
"I wish more than anything that I could tell you that. But she's strong, she's made it this far, and now we can protect her. We won't let anyone or anything hurt her again. She's ours now so we can keep her safe."
*Bang*
"O-ouch."
"Madi?" I call, "Are you ok?" I'm up off the couch before she can answer and find her sitting at the bottom of the stairs. There are tears silently coming out of her eyes. "Are you ok? Did you fall? Does anything hurt?" She shakes her head.
"K-k-keep-p?"
"What?" Tobin asks, coming from around the couch.
"A-aft-ter c-camp-p I-I-I-I st-stay h-h-here with-th y-y-you? K-keep me-me?"
"What? Of course! Madi you can be here for as long as you want to be here. We are never going to make you go anywhere." Tobin tells her.
"B-but-t y-y-you s-said-d st-stay unt-til c-c-camp-p, th-then th-th-that-t I-I-I'm I'm y-your-rs-s."
"No no kid, Jill wants us to have you here until camp, but if you want to be here longer we aren't going to make you leave." Tobin continues to explain to her.
"S-st-tay?"
"Yes kid, always."
She sits there silently for a moment seeming to be contemplating what Tobin told her. She nods, "I-I w-want-t t-to to st-stay, if y-you'll-l l-et-t me?"
"Yes, definitely we will. Now let's get you up off of the floor." I reach my hands out to her slowly so as not to spook her. She takes my hands and I gently pull her to her feet. "Did you need something from us?" She looks to the kitchen before nodding.
"W-wat-ter?" She requests looking at her feet, "P-please."
"Absolutely that is something that we can do." I turn to head to the kitchen before stopping, "Do you want a glass of a bottle?"
"B-bot-tt-tle?" I nod.
"Sounds good." I walk to the fridge and pull out a bottle from the fridge. Madi hesitantly follows me. "Did you need anything else?" She shakes her head. "Ok just let us know if you do." She nods and runs back upstairs to her room.
