5 years. 5 whole years without her. Without his bestfriend. Without his girl. The amount of times he thinks of her is exhausting. If it isn't Abby or his missing brother clouding his thoughts, it's her. Would she ever come back to him?
Mike was getting his little sister up and ready for school. It was crazy to him that his baby sister was now 7 years old. He had been her sole caregiver for 2 years. Being 24 and raising you 7 year old sister isn't easy. Mike isn't sure how he is doing. But his aunt Jan sure has an opinion.
Mike knocks on his little sisters door, "Abby, come on. We have to get you to school in 30 minutes." Mike knows she is up already, but he just needs her to hurry a little faster. Mike can't help but think about Evelyn. She is 23. She has had 5 birthdays without him. He can't help but be depressed thinking about her. She was his person. He knew that, his parents did, shit even Abby knows that with how much he talks about her.
Mike wishes she calls. Why won't she call him? Did she forget about him? Does she not care about him? Mike pushes the thoughts away. They were silly. Of course she remembers him and she still care for him. But, just why won't she call?
Mikes thoughts are gone the second Abby opens her bedroom door. She's all dressed in her school clothes. She passes Mike to grab her backpack and shoes. Once they are on, she goes into the bathroom to grab the hair supplies. She comes back out and hands them to her big Brother.
Mike leads his sister to the kitchen chair, where he has her sit so he can do her hair. He isn't very good, but luckily for him, a simple ponytail is something he can do. "Okay kid, let's head out." Mike leaves the supplies on the kitchen table, and grabs his keys. Abby rushes past him and gets into her spot in the car. Mike shaking his head at her with a little smile, locks up the house.
"Can you tell me a Aunt Evie story?" was the first thing Mike heard when he entered the driver seat of the car. When Abby was born, Evelyn made it know that she was an unofficial-official aunt to the baby girl. Mike thought it was the cutest thing ever. When Abby could comprehend what that meant, he made sure his sister knew just who her aunt Evie was.
An 'Aunt Evie story' wasn't out of the ordinary. He loved remembering the good times with the girl. He starts the car and heads down the road to his sisters school. Trying to think of a memory he hasn't told Abby yet, he starts by saying, "One time, aunt Evie and I were at the park. Now, remember how I said aunt Evie doesn't like caterpillars?" he looks in the rearview mirror to see his sister shake her head up and down.
"Well, we wanted to race down a double red slide. I went to the left, she chose right. She chose the wrong slide." he starts to chuckle at the silly little memory. "As soon as we were getting ready to go down, she sees a caterpillar crawling down the side of the slide. She let out such a loud scream. Evie made me get it off and release it into the grass. Instead, I took the creature in my hand and chased her with it."
A sweet little giggle was coming from his sister in the back seat. "That's mean Mike! Why do that to aunt Evie?". Mike loved hearing the words 'Aunt Evie' coming from Abby's mouth. "I was always taking the chance to get aunt Evie angry. She tried so hard to be mad, but she was the sweetest, she could never be mad at anyone."
The siblings pulled up to the school. Mike gets out and heads to his sisters car door. He gets her out and walks her up the steps to the school. He gives her a hug and then watches her make her way into the building. When she was safely behind the doors, he went right back into his car.
While driving to work, he thought back to the 'aunt Evie story' he told Abby. If he could time travel only twice, he would go back to save his brother and Evelyn. He would keep his younger brother in his view. But for Evelyn, he would keep her with him. Offer her a place at his house. He wouldn't have let her left.

Evelyn was just waking up when Ness enters the room she was staying in. "E?" Ness looked over at the bed to see his friend sitting up. "Oh thank god, I thought you were dead. I knocked like 5 times. How was your night?"
Evelyn moves her hair out of her face before saying, "It was good. Again, thank you so much for taking me in. I won't stay long." She looked over Ness's face to see an annoyed facial expression. "E, you aren't a stray dog, you are my friend who got out of a bad situation. I wouldn't have left you at that apartment. You know you are welcomed to stay for as long as you want."
Ness was Evelyn's saving grace. He never judged her. If there is one thing she did in her life that she was proud about, it was telling Ness her past and not Andre. She knew the second she met the abuser, his nice side was just a facade and he wasn't to be trusted with the information of her family. Who knew what he would do to Mike or Abby if he knew about them, especially now, when she just up and left his place when he was at work.
"I don't mean to take you out of the trance you were just in, ." Ness starts to say, bring Evelyn back to the man in front of her. "But, he called me. Like 13 times, asking if you were here or if I knew where you went."
Evelyn's face immediately goes white. Did he know she was here? Did Ness tell him? What was he going to do when he found her?
Ness goes to sit next to her on the bed, "Hey, it's okay. He doesn't know anything. I didn't say a word. Besides, he doesn't know where I live. It's okay, your safe." 'Safe' isn't what Evelyn would call it. Safe was back with Mike. Mike. The person who could calm her down. The person who hugged her until her panic attack was over. This isn't safe. This isn't Mike.
Evelyn's heart starts racing. Mike. She needed Mike. "N-Ness. Can yo- can you-". Ness is immediately pulling her into him. He didn't know what he was doing, but he would try. "Ness. I- I-" "Shh, it's okay. You're fine. Everything is okay. Want me to make you some hot chocolate?"
Evelyn shakes her head up and down. When Ness goes to make her drink, Evelyn gets up and goes towards her duffle bag. She searches and searches. When she finally finds the shirt. she runs back to the bed. She buried her face into the shirt. It doesn't quite smell like Mike anymore, but just knowing that the shirt was his, calms her down.
That was it, she needed to go back home. Except, home wasn't a house. It was Mike. It has always been Mike.
