Jenna put her phone on the table and tied her sandals around her calves.
He is coming here.
David is coming to pick her up which is ridiculous. There is no reason for him to come and pick her up personally. God, her friend, and over-reaction for her safety are really hard to bear. Ever since Jerry, Del has been very careful and protective of her. She has seen how emotionally draining and physically consuming that relationship was for her.
She couldn't blame her friend for turning into a scary mama bear with her but she's not a kid. She's not that naive girl anymore who lets people use her. She has grown and that means she can pull late nights. Commute late from work to the house. It's not very far from here and LA's nightlife is vibrant.
But there was no point in arguing. He's already on his way.
Jenna sighed and leaned against the table, folding her arms and resting her head sideways. The dark screen of her Macbook reflected her face against the glow of the city that came from the window on her right showing lines of exhaustion and a long day.
The fresh spark she had in the morning was now replaced with tired eyes and a headache that came from an empty stomach. Absent-mindedly, Jenna closed her eyes and opened the second drawer attached to the table. Her slender fingers roamed the depths of the drawer looking for the medicine when she heard the buzz of the entry door.
The security guard must've checked David in.
Jenna tilted her head back swallowing the pill when she heard a knock behind her office door. Immediately, her heart picked up its pace as she softly hummed a yes giving permission to whoever it was behind it while drinking the water.
David comes into view. Fresh and totally opposite of her worn-out self. He was wearing black sweatpants and a matching tee inside the jacket that hugged his shoulders. His hair was wet but a little dry from the front showcasing his natural curls.
Jenna blinked at him still not believing he was here, in her workplace. Seeing her formal abode where she usually spends her days.
"Hey!" She said but David didn't reply. He just kept looking at her.
The dark office room glistened under the city lights coming from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the right highlighting their side profiles with thick shadows.
"Sorry, I didn't pick up your call. My phone was charging," Jenna said swaying her phone at him. David's gaze drops to them for a second before looking at her.
"What is the time Jenna?" he spoke. His voice was dry and intimidating.
For the sake of accuracy and his chilling tone, Jenna turned to look at the wall clock beside the shelf, "Umm, Twelve ten,"
"So midnight then,"
Jenna got up, aware of where this was going. "Look, I am sorry I didn't call or leave a message. I was seriously swamped with work. Things aren't going well around here and I just completely forgot about informing anyone. I am really sorry to worry Del or you like this,"
David didn't respond. Instead, he lifted his arms up showing her the brown takeout bag he was carrying. "Lila thought you skipped lunch so I brought the first thing I saw on the way. You can eat and then we'll leave,"
"Wait, you're not angry?" Del said he was.
"I am," he said, "I literally want to go over the house rules with you but right now you seem tired. I can lecture you about pulling a long night without telling anyone some other time." He walks inside, limiting the large office space with his tall, masculine figure.
