David was still by the sink. Frozen.
"What do you mean Logan is in town?" Jenna asked Del with exuberance. Her voice rose a pitch before it settled down a notch.
David struggled to stay in control and continued cutting the apple. He held the knife quite tightly, his jaw clenched at the topic in hand. What do they mean by an ex-boyfriend they like? Is there even a person who has a truce with their so-called ex-partners? He thought but the answer came really quickly like a Japanese bullet train shattering his internal battle into tiny crumbs.
Of course, some people are friends with their exes and don't think ill of each other. He and Lauren are the biggest examples of it. They are still in touch and have built a perfect level of communication where none of them wants to kill each other for their past.
If he and Lauren can have that, why not others and by others he meant Jenna despite the rising displeasure of hearing another man had her once upon a time. Hugged her, kissed her, and claimed her as his when he hadn't even gotten a chance to show his attraction without feeling guilty about it.
The apples were all cut but he wasn't ready to leave the kitchen. Not before he confirms where this random ex-boyfriend stands in Jenna's life. He picks a pear and some grapes from the fruit basket before washing it. Maintaining his presence in the kitchen.
"He is having a work retreat here in LA. Should be stayin' for the whole week most probably. You wanna go visit him?" Del said oblivious to her father's storming thoughts.
David listened intently, noticing every syllable as Jenna replied, "He's not an exhibition Del,"
"You know what I mean,"
Jenna sighs. Hesitation coated her pause. "I-I am not sure if I should. He's an old chapter you know,"
"Yeah, but you and that old chapter are good friends. What's the worst that could happen if you met him?" From his periphery, he sees Del open her phone. "You'll kiss him or hug whatever. Of all the exes you have, he is the best one. I am not saying that it will happen but you know people aren't really friends with their exes much,"
David drops his knife and turns. Leaning his hips against the counter he looks at Jenna dead in the eyes. No humor. Just jealousy and the fueling rage burned beneath it. He saw how she fought his stare until Del slid next to her and held her phone in a way kids do when they show their parents some funny video.
Jenna's eyes move from him to the glowing screen in front.
"Look at him. Does he look like someone who works eight hours in a bank?" said Del in appreciation.
"Why are you so obsessed with his looks?" Asked Jenna ignoring his stare. He doesn't even know why he was glaring at her when they haven't even discussed what this is. Is there any feeling involved or is it simply physical? He doesn't know. They haven't talked and that's what made this situation even more complicated.
David doesn't know how to react. He has no clue where his jealousy is coming from. What right does he have to behave this way? They aren't exclusive and this attraction is the result of a three-week commitment.
Frustrated at his own reasonings, he crossed his arms and tightened his fist inside the crook of his elbow.
Del laughs at Jenna's question, "Why wouldn't I be? He is good-looking and he is a good friend. It's rare to have both in one person,"
"I suppose," said Jenna blankly.
"You know what, you should meet him and see for yourself how much he changed,"
