This is it. This is my fresh start. My fresh start from all the bullshit that happened back home. I was free.
I stepped off the bus that transported me to central Brooklyn and set off on my way to find my apartment block. Brooklyn was bigger than I thought, I think I've been wandering around aimlessly for half an hour and no one will help me.
I was starting to get frustrated. I found a bench to sit on and gather my thoughts, then all the memories from back home that I was trying to forget, flooded back into my head.
This really wasn't what I needed right now. I could feel the tears building, but I couldn't let any out, that would make me weak like my dad always told me.
Just as a tear slipped down my face, I felt a pair of eyes on me. I quickly swiped it away and flicked my head up.
"You ok?"
"Yeah," I say without looking at the person.
"I'm Rey," out of the corner of my eye, I saw her offer her hand.
I turned my head to look at her and took her hand,"Y/n"
"Hi," she paused when I didn't respond. "Do you need help with anything?"
I desperately needed help, but I'm not gonna admit that. It would make me look weak.
I avoided her eyes, she could tell I needed help, I wasn't hiding it very well.
"What do you need?"
"Directions"
"Where," she asked sweetly. She was really kind and patient.
"My apartment," I glanced at her.
"You're not from here are you?"
"No, I moved from Florida"
"Really!! That's epic!"
I found the letter with all the information of my apartment on it and handed it to her.
She skimmed over the letter,"That's not too far from here, follow me!"
She jumped up from the bench and started walking, I quickly followed suit and we walked side by side.
"So what made you move from sunny Florida to Brooklyn?"
I stayed silent for a few moments, debating whether I should tell her or not.
"Family problems," I muttered.
"Oh, I'm sorry,"she said a bit taken aback.
"It's ok," I whisper.
After walking for a while, we arrived at the apartment block.
"Here we are!" She exclaimed, throwing her arms above her head.
I stared up at my new home,"Thanks"
"No problem"
I went to walk inside, but she pulled me back by my arm. I turned to face her again.
"Sorry, but I forgot to ask, if you're not doing anything later, maybe you'd like to go out tonight?"
I stared at her,"I don't really 'go out'"
"Oh, it's just that I have a shift at the bar down the street tonight, I just wondered if you'd want company on your first night here,"she explained.
"I'll think about it," I say, really wanting to get inside.
"Ok, well, it's just at the end of the street if you do decide to come"
"Ok, thanks," I say monotonously, turning around and trying to enter the block for the second time.
I stepped inside and walked up to the front desk.
