Kevin powered on his phone, feeling its sleek surface against his fingertips as he settled comfortably in his chair. The worn-out cushion creaked slightly under Kevin's weight, adding a familiar touch to the ambiance. From outside, he could sense the bustling activity, a symphony of sounds permeating through the walls. Faint echoes of swords clashing during training sessions reached his ears, accompanied by the indistinguishable cheers and laughter of other sports activities taking place. Although he couldn't see the exact details, he could imagine the fluidity of the acrobatic moves performed on the field, envisioning flips and spins amidst the lush green grass. Occasionally, he caught glimpses of a spiraling object, perhaps a football, soaring through the air with the speed of a cannonball, leaving a trail of excitement in its wake. There was an occasional flicker of magic, a surge of chakra infused into a thrown object or a swinging motion, adding an enchanting flair to the scene.
But Kevin's attention was soon drawn back to his phone, a Samsung device adorned with a cool android green creature waving on the screen. As he powered it up, a loading circle appeared, indicating the internal apps within his phone's storage were updating. A blue progress bar accompanied the circle, teasing him with the message "Please wait" and a cute anime character peering above the screen. "You're still waiting, Kevin?" Sam asked, lounging on Kevin's brother Kalrin's neatly made bed next to Kevin's. "No, it's updating at the moment. I have to endure this little hiccup," Kevin replied, curling his lips to the side with a hint of impatience.
"Ehehehe, oh yeah, that happens when you haven't used your phone for a while. It acts up and powers off in the most peculiar ways, without realizing that it's still functional," Sam chuckled, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Right," Kevin shook his head and took a deep breath. "I know exactly how that happened," he said, a tinge of nervousness creeping into his voice as he recalled the bar incident, his reckless determination nearly leading him to his demise.
"Ah, come on!" Sam exclaimed, trying to lighten the mood. He tapped his fingers along his phone's screen, activating a multiplier game that both he and Kevin were planning to play. Sam hopped off the bed and walked alongside Kevin, offering his support by placing a hand on Kevin's shoulder and flashing a reassuring smile. Kevin looked up, gasping for short breaths, his puppy-like eyes radiating a mix of sadness and gratitude.
"You made it out alive, and that's all that matters to me," Sam reassured him. "My best friend, able to recover and still breathe." Sam nodded and gently patted Kevin's back, the slow rhythm of his hand mirroring Kevin's slow recovery from the wounds that still felt numb. Kevin paced back and forth, his mind restless, as he tapped the side of his chin, deep in thought.
"So, why did you want a harem, Kevin?" Sam asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity. "It can be just between us. I just want to know, you know?" Sam walked closer, locking eyes with Kevin. "I promise I won't tell anyone," he added, emphasizing his trustworthiness.
Kevin's uneasiness caused him to shift uncomfortably in his chair, his eyes briefly averting Sam's gaze. The room seemed to fill with a palpable mix of vulnerability and hesitation, the atmosphere heavy with unspoken emotions. Finally, summoning his courage, Kevin began to speak.
"Well, Sam... It's not exactly about having a harem for the sake of it," Kevin's voice carried a hint of introspection, as if he were delving into the depths of his soul. "You see, growing up, I always struggled to connect with others. It felt as though I were invisible, as if I didn't matter. Despite being an extrovert, I often found myself stumbling through social situations, too excited and eager, lacking the wisdom to navigate human interactions with finesse, be it with students or peers. I was unsure of how to fit in, despite my yearning to learn and grow," Kevin spoke, his words accompanied by intermittent breaths, his voice laced with both vulnerability and determination.
