Laineys POV

The rest of the week was not too bad with work. I had gotten used to everything and had even started to get a hold of some of the locals' names. I had been working the night shift tonight with Ethan tonight. Maverick was at work less these days and I haven't seen him much after that night at my house. probably for the best.

"oh no." Ethan said, looking to the front door and we watched as Frank walked in. I felt my heart sink to my stomach watching him.

"What's wrong?" I said, turning my attention to Ethan who started getting a beer ready.

"You're about to see a very respected man turn into a shitshow." he said before turning to Frank with a smile "Mr. Frank it's so good to see you as always."

"Ethan, how's life?" Frank asked as he sat himself down grabbing for the beer.

"pretty good sir."

Frank's eyes went t0 me and I was shocked to see his eyes light up.

"your Lainey,...Keeping Maverick in check still I hope."

I laughed, shaking my head "he's really not my boyfriend sir ."

"Oh well maybe that will change."

I don't see that ever happening no matter what anyone says.

I felt Ethan grab me and pull me away. "He looks ok to me." I said looking back at the man.

"He's drunk. He stopped at two bars before here. It's what he does every thursday. he's been doing it for the past few years ever since he found out his wife had cancer and then when that was gone he just kept doing it. The man has a lot of issues but won't ever go to a therapist." I looked back at him, not believing what I heard. could what I had been hoping for since I got here be true?"

"I'll watch him. " I for some reason took responsibility for this man when I really didn't need to. but as the night went on I realized I should have called for help.

Me and Ethan carried him out to Ethan's car throwing him into the back as he drove him to his house. Once we got there we looked back at him.

"Maybe you should go get his wife, asking her to come help." I laughed seeing him pass out.

"I just need a second before we carry him again." Holding up a heavy man was a lot of work for me. I hadn't helped someone up like that before. Ethan got out of the car and ran up to the door as I got out and opened up the door for the man who had started to sit up. He turned to me and cleared his eyes a little.

"You look like someone I know." he said and once again I felt my heart sink in my chest.

"Frank honey, why do you do this?" his wife said, making me jump a little as she came to help with getting him up. We walked him into the house and up to his room leaving with his wife thanking us a lot.

"Now he does that a lot. couldn't imagine being his wife and putting up with it." Ethan said pulling out of the drive as I looked back at the house feeling chills run through my body.

"Would you like to come up for a drink?" I asked him as he pulled up to the building. he smiled "Sure that would be nice"

walking into the building I felt eyes on us as Maverick came out of the mail room. our eyes locked but it wasn't in a good way.

"Oh boss!" Ethan said not knowing anything was up. I grabbed my bag and hit the elevator to go up.

"Ethan nice to see you...Lainey I trust you're settling into work well" I could hear his voice go hard when he said everything to me.

"Yes I am, thank you." I stood in between both of the men and felt totally wrong. I could feel Maverick burning holes into the back of my head. Once the doors opened all three of us got out and walked together.

"Wait, you live right next to each other." Ethan laughed as he watched Mav go to the other door.

"yep." I tried to laugh but it just sounded forced.

I pushed my door open and welcomed my guest in and looked up at Mav whose eyes were on fire right now.

I closed my door and went into my kitchen grabbing a beer for him from the fridge and getting myself a wine. he was walking around the apartment a little taking everything in.

"not a lot of pictures."

"yeah well I came into town with nothing but a wedding dress and a car." I shrugged my shoulders and put his beer down on the counter. he made his way back to me and sat at the breakfast bar.

"something seemed up with you and boss...something going on between you two." I almost spit my drink out at that ask.

"it's not like that at all."not for lack of trying. "He's just really been helping me out a lot after what I've been through."

He smiled a little while leaning in "a man doesn't look at a girl like he was looking at you and doesn't have feelings for them. He looked like he wanted to hurt me or rip you from me. I wasn't sure which first."

I just sipped my wine and tried to not let that bother me as I tried to get to know him more. I needed to make more friends here maybe to just not make it obvious things were a little off.
