Chapter 23

Lainey's POV.

I packed up most of my things and went to live at my fathers house. Thankfully Mary welcomed me. She was just happy to have someone more in the house. I had only been here two days but had gotten a lot of missed calls from Maverick and even some from Hanna. I just didn't have it in me to answer any of them.

I was in Pain again and I wanted nothing but to run from this all. That's what I did best and that's all I wanted right now.

"Don't do it baby girl." My dad stood at the door as I sat on the rocking chair that was out on their deck. The mornings  out here with this view made the pain a little more bearable. "You got the same look your mother did when she was ready to run. don't do that now right when I got you back."
I smiled a little. He came and sat in the chair next to me handing me a cup of coffee. 

"I'm Just thinking about going out and finding Maddie. bring her back here when I find her."

"Lie.." I rolled my eyes "Dad, I mean it. Maybe I should go out and find her. I know her best so maybe I can find her and bring her home." I couldn't promise she wouldn't have a few new bruises but I could bring her back.

"I think you need to hear that boy out before you think about going anywhere."

"I don't Know about that one." he just shook his head as he got up and kissed the top of my head. "Got to stop running dear. Not everyone is out to hurt you." I let that one sink in a little as I started to think of a game plan to go out looking for Maddie.

It was late at night. Mary and dad had gone off to go out to dinner together as I stayed home to try to make some food for myself and had a Christmas movie going. It was little things like this that made me happy again.

The doorbell rang and I ran to the door to see Hanna standing at it. She was holding a bottle of wine and a box. I opened the door slowly but didnt let her in.

"Yes my brother is an ass but I am actually here to defend him a little and possibly get you to talk to him."

"Should have stopped at Ass." she smiled but held out the wine and the box to me. "Let's talk."

We went to the backyard and sat with my cooked pasta and the wine and cookies she brought over.

"Your dad told me you might be here. I texted him when I saw your apartment had stuff gone."

"Does everyone in town know that he's my dad?" I laughed, popping a cookie in my mouth "Small town words get around fast. not the point though." she turned to me with her wine glass in hand. "my brother."

"Hang on." I sat up and filled my glass to the top and sat back again "ok now."

"He's an alcoholic." I spit the wine out. I had just sipped and sat up putting my glass down.

"He has been good with it the past two years because the woman who had given him so much pain wasn't reaching out. We all hated Abby. He was in love and was ready to settle down. She went to California to become a big star and then our father passed. It hit Maverick a little and he had a slip up but he kept it under control for my mother and I."

"Hanna, why are you telling me this.."

"Listen. I didn't like how my brother was trying to get with you. you were my friend first and I called dibs." Now that made me laugh and she did as well.

"But that all aside...he was actually good to you and I saw the day your crazy ex came into town that he really cares about you. I haven't seen him care for someone like that in a while. I believe that you have helped my brother get out of a funk, Lainey."

"sure...then why did he kiss that girl?"

"Lainey. she kissed him...Now I'm not going to have that talk with you. that's for him to talk to you about. I tried to talk to him about it today but we kinda got into a fight."

I reached out for her hand and she took it "I'll think about it ok..." she smiled and nodded her head.
