I never fully understood why people enjoyed parties

I never fully understood why people enjoyed parties. The loud noises, the sweaty smells, the annoying drunks swaying around, destroying everything in their path. It wasn't my scene and I doubted it ever would be.

That didn't stop Penelope from dragging me out to one of the dreadful events. My mistake was heading into town and not running the other way when I saw her.

"It'll be fun!" Penelope encouraged, as we reached our destination.

"Nothing about this is what I consider fun," I argued.

Maybe it was because of my time in the wolf's den, but I'd grown to hate overly crowded spaces. In the wolf's den, resources were tight as is and you had to fight for them. Being here reminded me of the constant battles that took place day after day and night after night.

"There's alcohol," she tried again. "You like alcohol."

"If I wanted to drink, I could've gone to the bar," I retorted.

Penelope sighed loudly. "Come on, Fenny, at least try to have some fun."

I grimaced at the awful nickname. "Don't call me that."

She rolled her eyes and grabbed my hand. "Come on. Enough stalling."

I glanced back at the car longingly. I doubted I'd be able to leave anytime soon if I waited on Penelope, but hopefully, she got distracted and I could sneak off through the woods.

When we arrived, foldable tables had been set up, food and drinks were already being served, and the crowd of people was steadily growing much to my dismay. Penelope began to speak to some of the people there and I found myself a spot near the food and drinks. If I had to be here, I might as well be comfortable.

Penelope glanced back at me and shot me a look that basically said, "Really?"

I shrugged. I wasn't like her with an endless social battery and I never would be. I preferred to keep my circle small and this was the opposite of small. Still, there was something entertaining about watching people make fools of themselves. Maybe it was a bit asshole-like, but watching people stumble about never failed to bring a smile to my face.

Even though I knew Oakwood was predominantly a human town, it still surprised me just how many were willing to go to a party in the woods. Before arriving, I'd done my research and the town was no stranger to the occasional wolf spotting. I figured that'd be more than enough to keep them out of the woods, but not all humans were equipped with a sense for self-preservation which was bad for them, but it was a feral wolf's wet dream.

"Cronan, can you go get drinks?" I heard someone say and my ears immediately perked up.

I scanned across the crowd, spotting the familiar blue-eyed man in the center. My eyes drifted down to the exposed portion of his chest and a mixture of desire and jealousy crept its way into my body. On one hand, I enjoyed the eye candy, but I doubted I was the only one who felt that way. It was difficult because even though my wolf saw him as mine, he'd never truly be mine unless he accepted the bond and I couldn't see that happening in any reality.
