It was official: I'd broken Fen.
Well, that wasn't quite right. Fen had broken himself. It had been two days since our little game and two days since he kissed me. I had thought—hoped—he would forget about it in the morning and move on, but he proved me wrong.
I knew Fen wanted our bond to work, it was one of the few things he'd been honest about from the beginning, but what I failed to realize was just how much one night could change him. He was smiling more, talking more, and just seemed to be more comfortable. It was strange. I'd never seen him in such a state even when he was drunk and it confused me.
That was how I ended up calling Eli. I typically tried to avoid calling him on Fen-related issues, but I couldn't help it this time.
The phone rang a few times before a familiar voice spoke. "Hello?"
"You are not Eli."
"Really? What gave it away?" Reuben sarcastically responded.
"Put Eli on the phone."
There was a brief pause and I could hear the sound of moving happening in the distance. Moments later, there's a sound of a door shutting and someone approaching the phone again.
"Eli's busy. You can call back later," Reuben said.
"Is he actually busy or are you just trying to get me to hang up?"
He huffed. "He's actually busy. You can blame your brother for that, you know. All I've been hearing about is this ceremony and how Eli wants to get suits and a dress for Willa."
He tried to sound annoyed, but I knew he wasn't. He might've tried to act like he didn't care, but if Eli was happy then Reuben was happy—especially when it came to family matters since he knew Eli didn't get the chance to grow up with his siblings.
"Tell Eli to call me back when he gets the chance."
He hummed in acknowledgment. "Is that all?"
I hesitated. Not because I still wanted to talk to Reuben, but because he had lived with Fen before he left.
"What was Fen like when you lived with him?"
"Fen? Why are you asking about him?"
"Is it a crime for me to be curious? You lived with him so you somewhat liked him, right?"
Reuben scoffed and said, "Like is an overstatement. I tolerated his presence since it was my fault he was in town in the first place. What made you ask?"
