I woke up to streams of gentle warm, early morning sunlight caressing my face. Blinking my eyes open slowly, I focused on the gap in my window blinds that allowed for the stirring intrusion. With a soft sigh, I sunk back further into the comfort off Anakin's strong arms which still held me firm and close to his chest. His deep, rhythmic exhales sent loose tendrils of my hair dancing across the sensitive shell of my ear. A soft smile tugged at the corner of my lips at the sensation as the delicious scent of him overtook my senses; the most intoxicating blend of masculine musk and woodsy pheromones. I wished I could bottle it up and keep it with me for the moments I knew he eventually be called away to duty.

He let out a soft groan and buried his head into the back of my neck as the dawn rays stretched onto the sharp planes of his face, rousting him from his slumber. As if by pure instinct, he tightened his grip on me and pulled me even closer so that the contours of my body pressed into his like fitted pieces.

I allowed my eyes to flutter shut again, hoping to steal a few more moments of rest. My bed had never felt more comfortable than it did in this very instance. However, much to my chagrin, Anakin broke the cozy, half-awake silence.

"I have to go to Naboo." He muttered, his voice gruff from sleep.

And just like that, my perfect morning ended.

"What? When?" I asked, unable to hide the disappointment in my voice as I turned to face him. Anakin loosened his grip to allow me to shift my body so that our noses were now practically touching.

"Now..." he whispered, hooded blue eyes scanning my face slowly. "I really should have left last night. But I convinced them to wait until this morning."

I felt my heart drop. But I knew he had a job to do. And the last thing I wanted to do was add tending to my feelings to his list of things to do before he left for a mission. I wanted to play it cool. To show him I could handle this.

However, despite my efforts in keeping my face neutral, Anakin lifted a hand up to my face. He gently pressed between my eyebrows, smoothing the sure furrow line of disappointment that I was unable to hide.

"Sorry, baby." He whispered, barely audible.

Swallowing hard, I forced a weak smile. "Why Naboo?" I asked, half expecting him to cut off my line of questioning and deem it "Jedi business." But he surprised me.

"Queen Jamillia specifically requested my protection detail. There was a threat made to the monarchy leading up to the festival of light. I've sort of become their go-to for these sorts of requests." He explained with a contrasting mixture of pride and exasperation. He had moved his hand from my forehead to rest on the mattress in front of my face, gently twirling a strand of my hair in between his fingers.

I nodded slowly. Anakin had told me about his heroics on the planet of Naboo when he was just a young boy. The citizens of Theed regaled him as a hero. And the queen trusted him.

However, I couldn't quite reconcile with the fact that a large part of Anakin's actions at the time were fueled by his adoration of Padme. That simple yet uncomfortable truth ate at me.
