"You're wearing that?" Anakin asked, exasperation seeping into his tone.
"Yep." I said, popping the "p" as I smoothed the fabric down my front. A small smile crept across my face as I glanced up to meet Anakin's eyes. He was looking at me with apprehension.
"Kels..." He cautioned.
"What? It's still so warm out, this is perfect." I replied with a smirk.
I'm not sure what compelled me to throw this dress into my bag when Anakin gave me exactly five minutes to pack before we departed. But the black mini dress ended up in my clutches when I was grabbing for clothes. Perhaps it was the fact that I was so woefully unprepared the last time we left Coruscant, I wanted more options this time around.
But now as I wore the dress, I was happy I had brought it along (Editor's Note: think the Renata Asymmetrical Dress in Mesh from Motel Rocks). The soft black fabric clung to my shape while the high neck and sleeveless cut added an element of polish. However, I could tell Anakin certainly did not like the fact that the hem of the dress just barely brushed above my mid-thigh.
"You're going to draw too much attention in that." He said, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I thought you wanted to be noticed tonight." I shot back.
"Yes, I want to be noticed. Not you." He clarified, stormy eyes lingering on my bare legs.
I rolled my eyes, not willing to let what I perceived as ego-driven possessiveness to impact my wardrobe. "You're being ridiculous. I like this dress." I declared.
Anakin let out a frustrated sigh and took a step closer to me. Refusing to let his towering height intimidate me, I lifted my chin to meet his eyes with a determined look.
"You clearly don't understand how things work here." He said in a dark voice.
"Enlighten me." I replied, crossing my arms over my chest.
"The Hutt Syndicate runs Tatooine. Especially Mos Espa. And if they see something pretty they like, they take it. Particularly when it comes to beautiful women." He explained, bringing up a finger to gently trace along my jaw. His touch sent shivers down my spine. "And you in that dress...you're the most beautiful thing to walk this gods forsaken planet."
I felt my skin flush at his complimentary words, but my stomach dropped at what he was insinuating. I knew from my conversations with Rayme that these major crime families had a heavy hand in the galaxy's abhorrent human trafficking system. I cringed at the memory of him boasting about the women he has at his beck and call, ready to dance for him or his cronies.
It was enough to turn my stomach sour. And my heart hurt for all the women ensnared in the evil clutches of these repulsive families. It made me angry.
And perhaps it was a small act of rebellion or simply a stroke of idiocy, but I was more determined to wear the dress. Anakin must have picked up on my mood because he let out a dark chuckle and pulled his shoulders back.
"You know what fine...fuck it. Wear the dress. I'd like to see someone try to lay even just a finger on you." He muttered, cracking his knuckles softly as he looked past me towards the door. I cringed slightly, not entirely loving the idea of Anakin getting into another bar fight defending my honor.
