Clementine had never intended for this to go on for so long. There had been many times before where she and Mother hadn't known exactly what the other one was doing over the course of their careers as spies. They had been forced to hide even what their own missions were for the protection of the other, but never this much. Never for this long.
MI6 hadn't asked Clementine to do this, but it had been such a good opportunity for getting into Umbra that she had just had to take it. Clementine had sworn an oath to the United Kingdom back when she had first joined the Secret Intellegence Service, and she viewed this as simply a complicated extension of that. Even though her decision had put her concern for her country over the unification of her family, even though it looked as though she was a traitor.
Clementine hated that word. Traitor. It may have applied to her, but she was no Benedict Arnold. Though, as occasionally went through her mind, maybe she was worse than him. Because he may have betrayed his (not yet a country) country, but he was really just aligning himself with his wife. But no one would ever want to think of themselves as a traitor, and so Clementine wouldn't even say the word out loud.
But even if she didn't consider herself a traitor, Clementine knew that she wasn't a good person. Ever since that night, she had know that any chance of being considered one had long passed. No ordinary good person would have made the decision she had. A good spy, maybe, but being a good spy doesn't make someone a good person. Not even close. There were outliers, but the way Clementine saw it, the better the spy, the worse the person. Herself included.
