Halen's POV:

District 12

Day of The Reaping

In the semi-stable District 12, many personalities can be found. The miners, the peacekeepers, the 'royals', the merchants, the ones barely making it by, the hunters, the bakers, and the musicians.

The musicians are where I'm found, Halen Elizabeth Storm, I was an outsider in District 12, to say the least. I don't remember much of my parents, my mom died giving birth to me and my father abandoned me at age 6. That left me with my older brother, Kanan.

Kanan always worked so hard to try and find us a way back to the Capital, where we are originally from. My dad had a really well-paying job in the Capital but when my mom passed away, Kanan told me he had a full-fledged breakdown and took us from District to District. Then when I was older and started to look more and more like my mother, he left. At least, that's what Kanan told me. Then Kanan and I fell in with the Covey after our parents were gone, and then we at least had someone on the older side to watch out for us, I loved it, it's where my spark and love of music blossomed.

The reason for being an outsider was simple, the mayor's daughter, Teagen, bullied me for as long as I could remember. Then there was my ex-boyfriend, Ivar, who had turned what was left of the district against me. He was a monster and he thrived off of chaos, he was horrible to me and Kanan nearly killed Ivar after he publicly shamed me.

Kanan and I lived in a cabin in the woods by a pond where we would catch fish to sell on the side and keep for ourselves. Kanan was a miner and he was never around anymore. My music had taken off greatly until the public shaming, then it halted giving me time to plot and write my next songs.

I put on the only decent outfit I'd owned with a speck of color on it and it was a bland green dress that had ruffled out at the bottom half for the reaping. Kanan had saved for over a year to buy this dress for me and I loved it, the dress made my blonde hair appear even brighter and my green eyes popped. Kanan took my hand as we walked to the town center. My heart was racing, Kanan noticed and stopped walking, "Hey, you're going to be okay. I will do everything in my power to keep you safe, I promise,"

I smiled at my brother, "Thank you,"

We continued our walk when I stumbled across a small garter snake. I smiled and took the creature into my hand causing Kanan to make a face, "Seriously?"

"What? He might bring good luck,"

Kanan scoffed, "Unlikely, but I like your optimism," I was never a snake lover but for some reason, garter snakes didn't bother me any.

Kanan and I separated and went to our spots. More men and women entered the town center and waited to see who would be chosen to die this year. It was rather obvious to me that being picked from this district was a death sentence, no one had ever won from District 12 before.

"Welcome everyone, thank you for coming, let's not delay the inevitable any longer." The mayor spoke as he walked over to the bowl with all of the men's names in it. "Kanan Storm," My heart broke as I watched my brother walk up to the stage. The mayor then walked over to the bowl with all the women's names. "Halen Storm," I felt eyes on me and I pressed my lips together before nodding. I looked at Kanan who held a sorrowful look on his face.
