Halen's POV:
The next morning, I woke to Kanan thrashing in his sleep, I looked over at Reaper who gave me a concerned look. I looked at Kanan's hand, where the bat had bitten him and it was infected. My heart dropped, and I motioned for Reaper and Dill to get out of sight. I woke Kanan by putting my hand on his forehead, he was burning up. He shot awake and gave me a distressed look. He went to say something but the only thing that came out of his mouth was foam, I drew in a few quick breaths before pushing myself up, "What is this?!" He yelled before lunging at me.
I bolted and went out the door, Kanan followed me and I heard my name being called by Dill. I was forced to the surface, I didn't want to hurt Kanan, there's no way that I could ever harm him, "Kanan, please!"
"Stop running!" He spoke but his voice was distorted, I was not talking to my brother.
I ran for the stands and tripped, I was trying to crawl away from my brother, and never once before in my life had I ever been afraid of him. But at this moment, he was scaring me. "Kanan, please, I didn't hurt you, I would never hurt you. You know this."
"I can't trust you!" He yelled.
My heart was shattering as I continued to try and get away from him, "Please,"
"What's wrong with me?! Did you do this?"
I heard a noise and ducked, Kanan's mentor sent him a drone and it flew the bottle of water straight into his chest. The glass shattered and the fluids being all over his chest sent him into a panic. He fell backward and landed hard on the cement block below us. The sound of his skull hitting the cement sent chills up my body and nearly made me sick as the sound echoed around the now-silent arena. I looked down at him, "Kanan?" I called. I got down as quickly as I could and made my way to my brother. I sat down next to him and ran my hand over his head to which I felt warm blood stain my hand, I had to hold my tears back so he wouldn't notice, "Hey, I'm not going anywhere, okay?" His eyes seemed to clear up just a touch, "You always watched over me and now I'm going to watch over you. You're going to be okay, Kanan," A few tears fell from my eyes as he tried to reach for my hand but his hand fell before he made it and he stopped breathing. "No," I whispered. I closed his eyes and let my tears fall, "I love you, Kanan. I'm so sorry," I looked up and just sobbed for a moment, I just lost what little family I had left, he was all I had, and I was now completely alone.
It looked like this might have been it for me too though, I wiped my eyes and went to grab Kanan's sword but he didn't have it. I gasped and looked at Coral and her followers who now stood before me. I stood up and tried to put some room between me and them but there were four of them and only one of me. I looked off in the distance and saw Reaper and Dill but there was no guarantee that he could help me or that he even would. The only reason he was my ally was because of Kanan, who is now gone. "Halen Storm, stay right there," Treech, the boy from District 7, called pointing his blade at me. I was surrounded and I was scared, I tried to keep an equal distance between each of them but they were getting far too close to me. Tanner, the boy from District 10, threw a set of chains at me and it knocked me off my feet. There was a stinging pain radiating from my left leg, I grabbed a rock and chucked it at Treech but it didn't do anything. "Hey, Coral. Do you mind if I take this one?"
"Not a chance," Coral replied and raised the pitchfork. She didn't see what I saw though, there was a series of drones heading right for us with bottles of water. I ducked and watched them stir up dust and slam into some of the tributes. I looked up and noticed the tributes were knocked down so I got up, grabbed a bottle of water, and ran out of sight. The pain in my leg was still there but I ignored it, that was the least of my worries at this moment. I was able to hide under some rubble, they didn't see where I had gone, "You idiots! How could you possibly let her get away?"
"I couldn't see a thing,"
"Get this water into a pile lumberjack and then when you're done, you two can watch that beam while we get your little friend from back home up there at least!" Coral hissed.
I watched Treech put the waters into a pile and a memory surfaced, I reached for the silver piece that Coriolanus gave me and it was still clung to my side. I looked around for cameras and got out of view. I carefully took the cap off and dumped some of the white substance into the bottle, careful not to get it on my skin. I closed the silver piece and put it back under my dress before making sure the coast was clear. I ran out from where I was hiding and put the bottle down, I looked up, I was paranoid about them coming back. I grabbed the first bottle in the pile and emptied it, I then took the second bottle and did the same, I repeated the motion with the third.
"Wake up!" Coral yelled after killing Lamina. I picked up the fourth bottle and ran, I crawled up the rubble that led into the stands where I saw a vent with a door on it. I was tripped up by Coral and chucked the glass bottle at her that shattered on contact with her, causing her to bleed. I pushed myself back up and ran into the vent and tried to pull the door shut but Coral grabbed it with a hand. Luckily, my adrenaline helped me to be stronger than her, I shut the door and slammed her hand between the metal. She screamed and yanked her hand from the door allowing me to lock it. She tried to jam her pitchfork into the vent cover but the openings were too thin for her to be able to get to me. "You're useless!" I heard as I covered my mouth to catch my breath.
I was safe for the time being and that's all that mattered, it gave Coral and her goons more time to turn on each other and more time for other tributes to die. I hated the thought of that but it was going to happen. Being able to hide in here also gave me time to mourn my brother properly.
A/N:
Ouch, we lost Kanan and for me, this was more upsetting than Jessup and Lucy Grey just because of the sibling aspect.
