Halen's POV:
The next morning, I woke up lying next to the fence. I was confused as to why I was over here until my memories of last night surfaced. I smiled faintly to myself until I saw the peacekeepers. "Let's go,"
"On your feet!"
I got up and woke Kanan up, he looked incredibly foggy and it was very unlike him. "Kanan, come on, we have to go,"
We were put into transports and the silence was deafening, glares were being shared all around the vehicle and the plotting was starting. I was anxious and felt my hip where the silver lay that Coriolanus gave me last night. That was my only true reminder that it hadn't all been a dream.
We arrived outside of the arena and were forcefully taken from the transports, the peacekeepers were rough with each of us and held guns to our backs. The girls and boys were being separated, I watched Kanan and Reaper be taken to the opposite side of the arena. Reaper looked at Dill, "I got her," I whispered and he read my lips and gave a stern nod.
I reached for Dill's hand but was yanked away from her by the peacekeeper. The doors opened and we walked into the arena, we walked through the turnstiles and that retched voice was heard from the speakers, "Enjoy the show," it repeated itself and I cringed.
Wovey and Dill grabbed my hands before being ushered away from me. I drew in a shaky breath as I was directed to my podium. Another voice was heard from above, "Stand on your marker, or you will be shot,"
I rolled my eyes, "That's reassuring," I muttered. I looked at the peacekeeper behind me and he was giving me a nasty look. I saw Reaper being forced to his spot but I couldn't find Kanan.
I looked around and tried to find Kanan when my eyes landed on Coral, she was glaring daggers at me and I knew what that look meant. She can try and kill me, it won't happen though.
I could see others staring and I leaned to my left to see what they were looking at and strung up in the middle of the arena rubble was Marcus. I gasped, I had to look away, it was a sickening sight. A countdown was started and I turned to watch the arena doors close, my heart was racing and I shook my head. "Kanan," I muttered. I looked at Reaper who was communicating with someone I couldn't see, I hoped that it would be Kanan but I wasn't sure. I squeezed my eyes shut and reopened them when I heard the alarm go off. I ran for Dill and took her in the direction Coriolanus told me about, I saw the whole in the floor. "Kanan! Reaper!" I yelled. Reaper had grabbed a spear and Kanan was with him and held a sword in his hand. With how closely I was paying attention to them, I almost didn't see Coral coming at me with a pitchfork. I shoved Dill out of the way and dodged the strike. I screamed and watched her get knocked down by Kanan. Reaper grabbed a hold of Dill and I took my brother's hand, "This way!" I yelled and led the four of us down into the hole. I looked back and saw numerous bodies on the ground making me ill, it was sickening to see how quickly we would turn against each other. I led them down the tunnel and heard more footsteps quickly following us. I tried to open some doors and so did Dill, while Kanan and Reaper were our protection. People were running at us from both directions and there was one lone door left that I managed to kick an opening into the bottom, "Come on!" I yelled and quickly got through, I helped Dill through, and next came Kanan, and then Reaper.
A girl tried to follow us through but she had been killed, she let out a scream and there were more screams heard after. The boys watched the door closely while Dill and I scanned the room, she was coughing worse now. The room was dark, there was a small stream of water and a few pillars that we could lean on to wait for the other tributes to do most of the work before we took over and then determined who would go home between the four of us. Reaper and Kanan took shifts watching the door, I offered my services but they refused to let me or Dill handle it.
Dill and I leaned on each other to rest while the boys talked a bit. I was worried about how Kanan had acted this morning, that wasn't like him, but he seemed to be fine now. He had managed to grab water as well from where the weapons were laid out. We shared the water and the boys, trying to be noble, made sure there was plenty for Dill and me. I wasn't satisfied though, losing my brother would be a horrible pain and I wasn't ready to go through that.
The night continued and it was clear that most tributes were taking this time to rest because it was silent besides the occasional cough from Dill.
In my mind, I was ready to do something foolish. I was hungry and was ready to go and scout for some food. I left Dill slowly and noticed that Reaper and Kanan were horrible watchdogs because they had both fallen asleep.
I carefully and quietly took Kanan's sword before crawling quietly out of the opening. I made my way up to the main level and slowly made my way to the center. I was being cautious of the ruble on the ground and stayed sharp on my surroundings. When I reached the center, I started looking through packs and found a couple of food items when my blood ran cold, "Enjoy the show,"
That did it, I stuffed the food into a pack and bolted. I turned back once but the figure wasn't coming after me. I turned my attention back to the hole in the floor and nearly screamed, his hand clamped over my mouth to keep me quiet. My heart was racing and I calmed down when I locked eyes with him. Kanan put his finger to his lips and brought me down to the ground level, we went into the room, and both Reaper and Dill let out a sigh of relief when we returned, "What the hell is wrong with you?" Kanan questioned and grabbed the sword from me.
"I-I'm sorry, I couldn't sleep because I was hungry, so I-"
"You went out there for food?!"
I nodded, "Yeah,"
Kanan shook his head, "Did you at least find some?"
I nodded and took the pack off before we heard a commotion from up above. We remained silent and when it was done, we ate some of the food but saved the rest for later.
"I didn't mean to yell at you, I was just worried about you, Halen,"
I nodded, "It's okay, I understand,"
"Are you okay?" I nodded and accepted the hug that Kanan provided me with. I stayed in his arms for a few moments, not ready to let go of him for what would be forever. We stayed there and then he pulled away. "Alright, enough of the mushy stuff, that wasn't our last hug. I promise,"
I smiled faintly and was finally tired, we sat down together. I looked at the camera and waved with a faint smile hoping that Coriolanus would see it and know that my spirits were still high, especially since he probably saw me leave the room. I rested my head on Kanan's shoulder and fell asleep hoping that this nightmare would end tomorrow.
A/N:
Oh, if only she knew who caused the turnstile to go off. What do you think so far? I'm rather happy with how it's going!
