Halen's POV:

When I woke up the next morning, I was alone. It made me sad but I also knew that Coriolanus couldn't stay with me overnight, especially after everything that happened last night. I got out of bed and got dressed before heading into town, I wanted to stay hidden in my home today but I knew how that would make me look.

I was looking for Coriolanus but he was nowhere to be seen. The whispers were starting already, that it was me because of what Ivar did to me and how he then got with Teagen. I was looking guiltier and guiltier by the minute.

My heart was racing so I ducked into an alley to catch my breath. I was formulating a plan in my head, I had to run. I couldn't stay here, I'm going to get killed if I stay here much longer because the mayor is going to think I killed his daughter. Even though after everything she and Ivar did to me, they deserved it.

I looked up when I heard a group of footsteps, I saw some peacekeepers and then Coriolanus pass by so I whistled to try and get his attention. It was successful because he walked back towards the alley a few moments later. He removed his helmet and walked over to me quickly, "Hey, are you okay?" He asked taking me into an embrace.

I shook my head and pulled out of the hug, "The whispers have already started, the mayor is going to get me killed, Coriolanus. Half of the town already thinks it was me, Ivar and Teagen are both dead. If they catch Spruce now, or Sejanus talks..."

"Sejanus won't talk,"

"How do you know that? They torture the people they catch for information here. Even peacekeepers," I said and shook my head.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I should have dealt with those guns myself, and Teagen... I wasn't thinking straight, I just wanted to protect you," He said placing his hand on my shoulder.

I sighed, "I have to run, North. Away from the districts. If I stay here now, I'm as good as dead too,"

"What about the Covey?" Coriolanus questioned.

"They can look after each other. I-I just wanted to say goodbye,"

"I'll come with you,"

"What about your family?" I asked.

"Look, I just learned that Hoff is sending me to 2 for Officer Training but none of that matters now,"

"You were going to leave?" I asked with my heart sinking.

"We were going to leave," He said looking me in the eyes, "But it's all Panem. As soon as they find that gun, they'll hang me. No matter which district I'm in. When can you go?"

"Tomorrow at dawn,"

"Okay, okay. Meet me at the Hanging Tree. First light,"

I nodded, Coriolanus gently set his hand on my chin before putting his helmet on and walking away.

~~~
Everyone was gathered at the Hanging Tree for the execution of Spruce's sister, Lil. Spruce was nowhere to be found and that's why they wanted to execute her before he had a chance to break her out, I was standing towards the front and kept my eyes locked on Coriolanus. "Three years I fought for the Capitol during the war. I've been angry. But this is the first time I've felt ashamed. Get the other one up here!" Hoff called.
The crowd parted as peacekeepers walked an individual through the audience. It wasn't until I saw the look on Coryo's face that I realized the man being walked through the crowd was his best friend, Sejanus. "Coryo," He called as he walked past him.
My heart sank, They caught him. "The Capitol has received word via jabberjay that this man conspired to break into our base's jail and flee North with a man named Spruce to release this terrorist from captivity. I'd expect this from a rebel but not from one of our own. This is treason, plain and simple. Play the recording!"
"The leader, Spruce, he wants to get his sister, Lil, out of jail on base. Hoff is going to execute her just because she knows the man that they killed. It's wrong."
Sejanus shook his head as the recording played, "No, Coryo. Coryo, help! No, no, no! Ma! Help! Ma! Ma!" He called as the hatches slammed killing Lil and Sejanus. I had tears in my eyes and looked at Coriolanus, his expression was deeply saddened and he jumped when the hatches opened.
Those Godforsaken jabberjays mimicked Sejanus's cries for help and his Ma. My jaw dropped and I locked eyes with Coryo. He was in pain and just trying to hold it together in front of everyone. The crowd diminished and I went to talk to Coriolanus but I was held back by other peacekeepers. "Can I just please talk to him?"
"Not right now, I suggest that you head home, ma'am,"
I locked eyes with Coriolanus again who faintly nodded. I sighed and made my way home feeling absolute dread pool in my stomach. I tried to shake it off but I just couldn't do it. When I got home, I began packing into my small bag, just the essentials. I began to break down because of everything that had just happened. I felt so terrible for Coriolanus because Sejanus was his best friend, I could only imagine the pain he was currently going through.
