At twelve years old, Rosemary Miller had been part of an accident that had sent her into a coma for two years. Two years later, when she woke up, she wasn't the same...
Charlotte was smiling. She held a purse in her hand and her phone in the other. "I was thinking we could go to Target," she said. "It's, like, super fun. I'm not sure why. It just is."
"Okay," Rosemary shrugged. "Let me go get my shoes."
Five minutes later, the two friends were walking toward the store, telling funny stories from their past together.
"You remember that one time you told me you could do gymnastics, and then you ended up sprawled in a rosebush?" Rosemary laughed, hugging herself with her arms.
"Oh, yeah. That's funny now, but back then it was painful." Charlotte rolled her eyes playfully.
"You cried. For two hours straight."
"Like I said, painful." Charlotte shrugged. "You remember when you thought that the little balls we made out of wet sand were cocoa puffs? You nearly ate it. The teacher nearly fainted."
Rosemary giggled.
"We had a lot of fun together, didn't we?" Charlotte had a small grin on her face. "With you eating sand and me falling into thorns, we made a great duo."
"We still have fun," Rosemary corrected.
Charlotte nodded. "Yeah," she said. "I probably told you this a million times already, but I missed you. Those two years...they were the worst. It was like...I lost my best friend, and all the dreams we had together had dissipated. But now with you back...I'm starting to get that hope again. We could go to college together. Be dorm mates."
"I'd love that," Rosemary nodded.
Her friend smiled. "It's you and me," she said. "We're a team now. And we're gonna stick together, yeah?"
"Till the end," she agreed.
"Till the end," Charlotte repeated.

He looked down at the picture of them both, together, their arms around each other. She was smiling a beautiful, large smile and so was he.
It was back when they were both happy, both lived happy lives.
He closed his eyes.
"I wish I hadn't been so stupid," he whispered. "I wish...I wish I could've saved you. Somehow."
