He sat down by her grave, resting a pink rose by the headstone. The petals were fragile and soft, just like how she had been—but she hadn't been fragile in a bad way. It was in a good way, but it had taken a toll on her. A huge toll.

"Did you know," he whispered, "that a pink rose symbolizes love between family members?"

He had searched it up hours before, out of curiosity. He doubted that she'd known; it had just been her favorite flower, her favorite rose. He couldn't think of it as more fitting.

"I miss you," he said. "Every day. Every second. It's so quiet. Everyone just stares at me with pity, and—and I really can't take it. Why did you go?"

He fell silent and played with his jacket sleeves. "I knew one day I would have to let you go," he whispered. "I knew it. I'm glad, though, that I got to know you more than I did. Even if we had our disagreements."

He smiled softly, reaching out to straighten a petal. "I love you," he said. "More than you can ever think."

He stood, checking his watch. "I have to go to school now," he told her. "I'll come back soon."

The boy turned, and the wind ruffled through his hair. He smiled again and turned to her grave. "Bye," he said.

Will walked with Kyle down the halls, his shoes sliding against the floor. He didn't bother walking properly.

"What's wrong?" Kyle asked finally.

"Nothing." He swallowed and set his jaw, trying to ignore the fact that Rosemary, who had hit him three days before, was turning around the corner. They hadn't talked properly since she'd slapped him.

"Are you su—hey! That's Rosemary, and she's without Jackson! Let's say hi!" Kyle waved at her and she pretended not to notice them. As she walked by, Will could see the annoyance in her eyes; the annoyance directed at him, her little brother.

Kyle pouted. "She didn't see us," he said, and then shrugged. "Oh well."

"Good," Will snorted, turning toward his locker. Kyle frowned.

"What do you mean, 'good'?" Kyle demanded.

"We argued."

"So did my brother and I."

Will sighed and shook his head. "Nevermind. Forget about it."

"Okaaaay..." Kyle looked at him weirdly. "So...what did you get on that math test?"

---

"Rosemary," her mother said. "You have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning, just to remind you."

She paused by the stairs and sighed. "Okay," she said, and disappeared up to her room.
