SIX YEARS AFTER ROSEMARY'S DEATH
AGE 20
William Miller sat with his girlfriend, Luana Tyler, in front of Rosemary's grave.
Their fingers were intertwined, and Luana's head rested on his shoulder.
"This is your sister?" Luana whispered.
Will nodded. "Rosemary Miller," he said quietly. "The best big sister a brother could ever ask for."
Luana smiled and leant forward.
"Hi, Rosemary," she said. "I'm Luana Tyler, Will's girlfriend. I've heard a lot about you from Will. I just wanted to say thank you, for being a huge part of Will's life. I know you made Will happy. I also know that not all siblings are like you two, so kind and considerate of each other. I admire you for that, you know? I have my own brother, and we fight all the time, and seeing Will talk about you with so much love...it just inspires me to be kinder to my own brother, too. I've heard so many good things about you, and I think that one day, if we could've ever met, I would've liked to have you as my own older sister..."
Will listened, his head tilted back as he smiled, listening to his girlfriend talk to his sister. He closed his eyes, listening to the grasshoppers chirp and the wind blow, feeling the soft waves of air hit his face...
He knew Rosemary was gone.
He also knew that Rosemary had known she had been about to die, and she hadn't been afraid.
She was okay with it.
And, six years later, so was Will.
It was time to move on, time to make new memories without forgetting the old ones. It was what he had promised to his older sister.
He would never forget.
