He sat down, closing his eyes, breathing in the scent of dirt. He twirled a rose between his fingers, a pink one, as his lips trembled.
"I'm a terrible person," he whispered. "I'm so, so, so terrible. You knew that. I knew that."
He bit his lip.
"So why did you never give up on me?"

Rosemary hitched her back pack over her shoulder, staring at James. "You know, you never did say why you didn't switch schools with Charlotte. She didn't tell me why she left, either."
"I don't know," James said. "It was a last moment thing—"
"How do you not know?!" Rosemary exclaimed, confused. "You guys live in the same house, right? So don't you hear each other or your parents talki—"
"Rosemary. Stop."
"—ng and like, don't you two ever—"
"I DON'T KNOW." James turned around, his fists clenched, his cheeks turning red. "I don't know, okay? I don't know what the hell is going on with Charlotte, nor do I care. You really don't know when to stop meddling into other people's business, do you? Charlotte could be doing drugs or getting drunk for all I know."
He stormed off, leaving Rosemary more confused and hurt than before.

She passed Jackson Crowle in the hallway, who stopped her.
"Hello, Rosemary," he said, amusement in his eyes.
"Jackson," she said evenly, still remembering her encounter with him a month ago, about him warning her to never speak of his mother again.
"I'm so surprised. Don't you care about your brother?" he asked.
Her lips parted and she tilted her head. "What?" she asked. "Of course I do!"
An amused grin played at his lips. "Ohh, I see now. I see what's going on." He wiggled his eyebrows and smiled, moving past her.
She scrunched her nose, confused.
"Hey, Rosemary?"
She turned.
Jackson offered her a smile. "See you around."
