It was a rainy day when the news had been broken to them.
Their parents sat on the sofa, nervous expressions on their faces. "Rosemary, Will," their mother said.
Will sat down on a chair facing his parents. "Why did you call us?" he asked.
"We're, um..." their mom bit her lip nervously. "We're moving."
Will froze, staring at his parents. Rosemary stopped breathing beside him. "What?" he demanded.
"We're moving." Their mother took a deep breath. "Your dad found a better job opportunity. Somewhere else. And...there's also free health care."
Their parents glanced at Rosemary, and Will did, too. There was a look of realization on Rosemary's face.
"Oh," she said.
Will frowned in confusion but shook his head. "So...um, when?"
"In three days," their dad spoke quickly.
"WHAT?"
Their two voices shot out at their parents who both winced. Three days was too fast! Three days...
Kyle wouldn't be his best friend. Will wouldn't be able to visit Charlotte.
"Where?" he choked out.
"Canada," their mother whispered.
Canada was so far away. Hours away.
Will ran a trembling hand through his hair and closed his eyes.
"Three days is so soon," Rosemary said, her breathing labored. "Three days...that's not enough time!"
There was panic in her voice; hesitation and longing. Suddenly, Will remembered Jackson and a small grin formed on his face.
Jackson wouldn't be able to hurt her.
"That's not enough time to say goodbye!" Rosemary continued.
"Rosemary, dear," their mother whispered.
Rosemary clutched her forehead, her fingers at her temples as she shook her head. "No...no, I can't...I can't," she said. "I can't just leave."
"Rosemary," her mother said, standing. "Calm down...this isn't good fo—"
"No, I don't care!" Will was shocked to see tears stream down her cheeks.
She actually liked him, Will realized.
And that was when he realized, that even though Jackson never directly hurt her, he still did. Rosemary was crying, and Will had never seen her cry in a very, very long time. Rosemary was hurt over the fact that after three days, she would never see Jackson again.
To Will, he was happy to jump and dance around the house.
But to Rosemary, it was like her heart was being shredded into pieces.
Their mother wrapped Rosemary into a hug, where Rosemary sobbed into her shoulder. "I can't feel," Rosemary said after a while. "I can't...I can't think. Everything in my head hurts."
"Sleep, go take a nap," their mother suggested. "Remember, you have that appointment that Dr. Hamilton suggested a long time ago. The overnight one."
Will tilted his head, extra confused. What overnight appointment?
"Y-Yeah." Rosemary nodded slowly, and pulling away from the hug, she made her way to her room.
He studied his mother's face.
Why did she look so worried?
---
"Relax," Dr. Hamilton advised. "This appointment is just to see your brain activity overnight, to see if it could give some clues. We'll be monitoring your brain."
"Okay." Her voice shook but she shook away the nerves. "I just need to sleep?"
"Yes."
Well, that was great. After the revelations from today, Rosemary could sleep. She was so, so tired from fighting and arguing, and the drama being friends with Jackson was bringing. Why couldn't Will just let it alone and give her peace?
Not that it mattered anyway. Two more days, and it would be all over.
Dr. Hamilton waited as Rosemary sat on the bed, slowly lying down, before he set up the medical equipment, doing what he needed. He set up monitors, hooking them onto her. "I'll be in a couple rooms over, and there will be nurses here regularly. If you need anything, just hit the button on the side of your bed."
"Okay," she whispered. She reached over to set her phone on the nightstand next to the bed and shut her eyes.
"Night, Rosemary," Dr. Hamilton said cheerfully, turning on a nightlight and closing the door behind him.
---
His voice shook with sobs. "I'm sorry for everything I ever did to you," he said shakily. "I'm sorry. I'm so, so, sorry. We're family, how could I have ever given up on you...?"
She had died three months ago. He would never forget her funeral, so sad and dark and full of mourning.
He would never forget her pale face.
Her closed eyes.
Her limp arm, reaching for one last goodbye.
Bile rose in his throat and he gagged, turning away, trying to take control of his emotions.
"I...I don't think this is real," he whispered. "It's a dream. Right? It's like those movies. We fight and then we get some terrible dream and we make up and have a happily ever after."
He closed his eyes.
"I wanna wake up. I wanna wake up and hug you," he said. "But Dad says it's real. You're not coming back, are you."
He swallowed. "I loved you always," he whispered.
