"We're finally here! Go nuts and get what you need. Call me when you're done."
"Bet." Sky said.
We part ways and I walk into the aisle that has all the candy and cookies.
"Cookies, cookies, cookies..." I browse the bottom shelf, trying to find my favorite cookies.
Just as I was about to turn around and ask for help, someone bumps into me, knocking me onto the floor.
"Shit! I'm so sorry."
She bends down, attempting to help me to my feet.
"Don't worry about it." I stick out my hand, accepting her gesture. "I'm Ryder, by the way."
"Angel. Sorry again. I wasn't paying attention."
"Seriously," I place my hand on Angel's shoulder. "It's all good. Besides, you didn't mean to."
Angel smiles, showing off her dimples.
"At least let me buy you something."
I chuckle. "No need. But, you can help me find the coconut sugar cookies."
"Um, you won't find them here. They ran out of stock two days ago."
"You've got to be shitting me." I mumble. "So, did you come here with anyone?"
"No, you?"
"My best friend. She's just a few aisles over."
"Ah."
"Hey. We're going to go back to our house once we leave and just chill right before dinner, if you want to join us."
Okay, no, it wasn't very smart to invite a complete stranger over. And no, I don't always make smart decisions. But, I didn't say I was smart, now did I? But, you'd feel the same way too if a poor girl was beating herself up over an innocent occurrence.
Unless you're just a dick.
Angel stares at me for a few seconds.
"Your guys' house? Sorry. I don't mean anything by it. You just look really young."
"It's totally cool. I am. I'm only eighteen, and it's actually her dad's house. I've just been living there ever since they took me in."
"Oh." She looks down at her feet. "I'm sorry if I pressed a sensitive subject."
"Dude, you've got to stop doing that."
She scrunches her face, her eyebrows furrowed. "Doing what?"
"Apologizing. You haven't done anything wrong. Besides, how else are you supposed to get to know a person if you can't even ask questions?"
"So, do you think your friend and her dad would mind?"
"Nope. They're pretty chill. Can I see your phone?"
"Sure."
I open her contacts and put in my information:
Name: Ryder Freeman
Number: (502) 397-1027
Address: 4812 Oak Pointe Dr
Birthday: March 20, 2000I hand Angel her phone back.
My phone suddenly rings, startling us both.
"Sorry. It's my friend. One second." I accept the call. "Yeah?"
"Got the dye. Now, I've just got to get the rocky road and I'm all set."
"Cool. I've actually got to get a few more things."
"Okay. Just text me what aisle you're in when you're done."
"Alright, bye."
"So, what do you need to get?"
"Not much. Just hair dye, 30-developer, bleach, ice cream, spicy noodles, and soda. What about you?"
"Tampons, ice cream, and some candy."
"Well, we've got all day." I smile as I start to push my buggy. "We can get your stuff first. I don't mind."
"Thanks. So, what color are you going to dye your hair?"
"Purple. And my friend, Sky's going to dye hers blue. We're having a late night."
I smile at the thought of us damaging our hair and eating our weight in our feelings while watching our favorite horror movie.
"So cool. I've always wanted to dye my hair."
"You should. It's your body. And in life, sometimes you've just got to rebel and say 'fuck it'. Do the shit that you want to do. After all, are you living for yourself or the people around you?"
"You're wise, you know that?"
"I have my moments."
"If you don't mind, can we go and get some dye?" She fidgets with the rings on her fingers.
"Sure, let's go. What color do you want it?"
"Purple. I just feel like it'll look so pretty on me."
"Honey, it'll look absolutely gorgeous on you. Just wait and see. So, how old are you?"
I grab two boxes of purple dye.
"Eighteen."
"I've never seen you around. Are you visiting from somewhere?"
"Yes and no. Yes, I'm not from around here. No, I'm not visiting. I actually just moved here from Texas."
"Who do you live with?"
"My mom and her asshole boyfriend." Her face turns sour at the mention of her mom's boyfriend.
"I totally understand." I rest my hand on her arm. "Are they okay people?"
"I guess. My mom works a lot, and her boyfriend just hangs around the house, drinking all the time."
"If you ever need a place to stay, even for a few days, you know where you can go."
She leans in for a hug and I accept.
We're still for a few seconds, in each other's embrace, inhaling the other's scent. We slowly pull apart when a girl asks us to pass her the pink dye due to us being in her way. I hand it to the girl and turn my focus back to Angel.
"Actually, can I join y'all tonight?"
"Of course. But, you'll have to share a bed with me or Sky since we share a room."
"That's fine with me. Thank you, Ryder." She hugs me again. "I really appreciate it."
I lean back in and rub her back, enjoying her warm and welcoming embrace.
"Anytime, love. We should get the rest of our things."
"Right." She breaks the hug. "Your friend's probably waiting."
"She'll be fine. Come on, let's go get your tampons."
A few minutes of small talk and shopping later.
"It's about time." Sky said, standing near the checkout line.
"Shut up."
"Who's this?"
"Angel. She's going to be staying with us for the night."
"Cool. Do you like Chinese?" She asked Angel.
"Yeah."
"Good, because that's what we're having for dinner."
