She barely made it into her bed before passing out. I stood in the doorway of her tiny bedroom that was cluttered with stacks of books listening to her soft breathing, she doesn't deserve to have all of this shit in her life. I turned to the living room as there was a knock on the front door and I cleared the space in a few steps to open it. On the landing was my brother carrying the duffle bag I'd asked him to bring. "How is she?" he asked, and I motioned for him to enter.
"The ER doctor said she has a few bruised ribs and a fractured wrist. Did the asshole say anything?"
He shook his head passing the duffle bag to me. "Nothing pertaining to Avalona. But he had a roll of two grand in his pocket along with a slip of paper with her address."
I chewed on the inside of my cheek going to set on the couch. "Do you think he broke in yesterday?"
"You know I don't believe in coincidences. We'll keep grilling him, hopefully once he comes down from whatever he's on we'll be able to get more out of him and I'll let you know."
"Thanks Arik."
"No problem man.
I stood and locked the door behind him then picked up my phone as it rang on the kitchen counter. "Yeah," I sighed putting it to my ear.
"You were supposed to be watching out for her," Silvano's voice hissed from the other side.
"Says the man who's states away," I grumbled. "Arik has the guy who did it, a druggy who had her address in his pocket with two thousand dollars in cash."
"Two days in a row I think you need new security."
"I'm definitely going to look into it."
"I'll send a few of my guys over to keep watch. How is she?"
"She'll be okay, just a fractured wrist and bruised ribs, she's resting right now. She asked me to stay with her so I'm going to sleep on the couch."
He was silent for a beat. "I'll be home the day after tomorrow and I plan on asking her to move in with me in Oyster Bay."
It was my turn to be silent for a moment. "I can't say that I like the idea but it's her choice."
The line went dead, and I let out a breath tossing it onto the counter.
-AVALONA-
Throbbing pain woke me, and I let out a groan as I climbed out of my bed going to the kitchen where I grabbed the pill bottle from the island before filling a glass with tap water. As I was swallowing one of the painkillers I caught sight of Vartan's large form on my couch. I laughed a little and sat the cup and bottle on the counter then grabbed a blanket and pillow from the closet. "Vartan," I said standing by the couch. He stopped mid-snore and grumbled to himself opening his eyes. I held out what was in my hands. "Here. The recliner is more comfortable."
He sat up a little and accepted the pillow placing it behind his head then settled back taking the blanket. "Thanks," he breathed rubbing his eyes. "How are you feeling?"
"My body is throbbing but that's to be expected. I just took one of the pills the doctor gave me and am gonna head back to bed."
"Use the next few days to relax. I've got Nathan covering the bar."
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. The doctor said for you to take it easy."
"Thanks Vartan."
"You don't have to thank me Kid."
I smiled a little walking back to my room. My phone began to ring as I was settling back under my comforter, and I winced a little at the throbbing in my face as I grabbed my phone off the nightstand. "Hello," I greeted as I put it to my ear.
"Hey Darling," Silvano's deep voice sighed in my ear.
"How's Florida?" I asked laying back against my pillows.
"Miserably hot but it would be better if you were here with me... I heard what happened. I am sorry I wasn't there to protect me."
"You have nothing to apologize for, it's not like you knew it was going to happen."
"Even so. When I get back on Wednesday I want us to have dinner because I want to talk to you about something."
My brow furrowed. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything is fine Sweetheart. Don't worry about, you get some rest."
"Good night Silvano."
"Good night my Sweet Girl."
