When we made it back to my apartment, we took a quick shower before settling into bed. She was sleeping soundly while nestled against me when my phone lit up on my nightstand and I glanced over to see it was an incoming call from Arik. Gently I slipped out of bed pulling the blanket up over her. "Hold on," I whispered into the phone after accepting the call then grabbed my cigarettes of the dresser and walked out onto the balcony that overlooked the city. "What's up? It's too early for a social call," I sighed after lighting one.
"There was a prison break at Sing-Sing," my twin informed and the blood in my veins ran cold.
"When?"
"The night before last, I just got the official report."
I took a long drag and glanced over my shoulder to look through the sliding door watching Ava sleep peacefully. "Was Crawford one of them?"
"Yes... Him and a few members of the Blue Vipers."
"Fuck," I hissed. "I gotta call Silvano. Keep me in the loop."
"Of course, V."
I hung up with one brother and immediately called another. "What's wrong?" Silvano answered right away.
"Crawford is out of Sing-Sing."
"What!?
I flicked the ashes from the end of my cigarette before inhaling again. "Arik just called and told me there was a break out at the prison night before last. He just now got the official report from the DOC. He broke out with members from the Blue Vipers."
"God damnit! I will be on the next flight back. Does Ava know yet?"
"You were my first call after I hung up with Arik."
"Okay, wait 'til I get back and we will tell her together."
"All right, have a safe trip and we will see you when you get back."
I ended the call and let out a sigh before finishing my cigarette. The lighter and pack were tossed onto the dresser when I returned but instead of crawling back into bed, I slumped into an arm chair that was against the wall watching Ava sleep. It's been about six months since Crawford Blackburn went and on trial and Silvano took down the Romanos and Ava has only just stopped looking over her shoulder; half a year is how long it has taken her to feel at peace now that the man who'd destroyed her life at the age of ten had been brought to justice. It will break her to know that he's escaped, and her life is probably in more danger now. "Vartan," she muttered as her pretty eyes fluttered open, and she rubbed at them.
Slowly I rose from my seat and stepped to the bedside. "Princess," I whispered and closed my eyes when she reached out her tiny hand to place it on my cheek.
"What are you doing up?"
My eyes opened as I placed my hand on top of hers and I looked down at her. "I couldn't sleep so I stepped onto the balcony for a smoke."
"Will you come back to bed please?"
I nodded and kissed her head before I walked back to my side of the bed. After placing my phone back on the nightstand, I crawled under the comforter and she scooted back against me as I wrapped my arm around her waist, holding her tightly. "I love you Little One," I whispered kissing her hair.
"I love you too."
-AVALONA-
He's free.... Fucking Crawford Blackburn is free. I guess I'm a fool to think he'd really have to pay for what he did. Hot tears slid down my cheek to sink into my pillow as I lay there with Vartan's tree trunk arm wrapped protectively around me and I forced my body not to tremble with the fear that flooded my blood. I should have known life was never going to be easy for me...
