-ONE YEAR EARLIER-
I could feel eyes on me as I stood behind the bar taking inventory of the liquors and everything else we would need to make drinks. My eyes rose from the notepad I held to the mirrored wall behind the various bottles; from the high rollers area a man was watching me instead of the girl dancing on stage which I found strange because VIPs never pay attention to the person making their drinks. "Hey Ava," Maria, one of the waitresses, said placing her tray on the bar top and I turned setting down what I held.
"Whatcha need?" I asked, grabbing my order book.
"For the VIP section I need a Jack and Coke, a dry martini, two side cars and three old fashions."
I wrote down the order and nodded to her. "You got it, give me ten to get them all mixed up."
"Thank you, I'm gonna take a quick smoke and bathroom break."
I smiled and watched her go then set to work mixing the drinks. This job wasn't one I imagined for myself when I was growing up but when you're eighteen and get kicked out of foster care you take what jobs you can get. Luckily for me I'm a quick study and the club's owner took pity on me and had friends in high places who looked the other way about me being eighteen and working behind the bar. I've been here for the last five year and it doesn't pay the best but enough for me to pay for my cell phone, buy a few books every now and again, food, any other things I may need on top of putting some away into savings. Vartan, the owner of the club, even went as far as having the second floor converted into an apartment for me so I wouldn't have to pay for housing. I was placing the drinks on the tray when Maria returned. "Let them know that last call is in fifteen minutes so if they want another round I need to know in the next few minutes."
"Sure thing, thanks Ava."
I gave her another nod as she picked up the tray heading back to VIP, and I went back to my inventorying. The group in VIP was the last to leave and the whole time I could feel eyes on me while I cleaned, closed out tabs and started the end of day paperwork. "Jack and Coke in VIP asked for your number," Maria informed after the doors were locked and she was putting up her apron and tray.
"Oh yeah?" I laughed as I was closing out the last tab of the night.
"From what I saw he had more of an eye for you than Mona Lyza."
I rolled my eyes at this. "Anyone who can afford the VIP section for the whole night isn't exactly someone who'd really want anything to do with the bartender."
"Ya' never know. You work tomorrow?"
"No, it's my night off so Vartan is manning the bar."
"Well, you enjoy your day off."
"Thanks. Be safe going home."
When all the girls and bouncers left for the night, I went to Vartan's office to finish the nightly paperwork and left it on the desk for him to look over when he came in then headed up to my apartment. With the heavy metal and wood door locked I settled onto my couch with a book and a cup of tea- my nightly after work ritual.
