Chapter 7

(((SHADEKIT'S POV)))

I watched with narrowed eyes as Bramblestar blinked at Bristlefrost, waving his tail for her to come over.

"Bristlefrost, would you mind doing another... special task for me?" 

Squirrelflight gazed up sharply and frowned. "Bristlefrost has Mistkit to take care of, and she's already organizing the patrols instead of me."

Bristlefrost's eyes were shining eagerly. "Of course I wouldn't mind it!"

"I'm afraid some of our clanmates having been following the warrior code quite as closely as they should be," Bramblestar began, and Squirrelflight frowned at him, half in shock and half in some emotion I couldn't quite recognize. "Are you accusing our clanmates of being codebreakers?" Squirrelflight asked.

Bramblestar shook his head. "No, of course not. But if Bristlefrost kept an eye on them, I would be able to...help them."

Bristlefrost blinked eagerly at Bramblestar. "Then StarClan would definitely come back to us!"

Bramblestar blinked warmly at her. "Of course they will."

Squirrelflight was still frowning. "I still don't think it's right to have Bristlefrost spy on our clanmates."

"She's not spying." Bramblestar replied breezily.

I crept backwards, not wanting to be noticed. 

What would happen if I got caught 'codebreaking'?!

(((FLOWERKIT'S POV)))

I sat up in my nest. I hadn't forgotten my dream last night, but I'd assured myself that since I wasn't a medicine cat, my dream couldn't mean anything. 

Besides, there were better things to think about;

My hind leg felt a lot better, and my eye didn't sting as much when I opened it, although a massive scar still dripped across my hind leg and a pink scar ran across my eye; Jayfeather had said they wouldn't heal, but I was grateful to even be walking and seeing again.

My life could have been destroyed that night and I was only four moons old.

At least, Jayfeather had agreed to let me finally leave the medicine den for a while. More specifically, he had meowed, 'I'll finally get you annoying furball out for a minute and have peace for myself!".

Still, I figured Jayfeather would have said that to anyone.

Except himself, of course.

I stood up shakily, and Alderheart stood firmly beside me for support.

"If you need a break, I'll be right here." He promised.

I nodded, just a little embarrassed, although I was more grateful.

Trying to steady my wobbly hind leg, I managed to pad out of the medicine den. The sunlight blinded me for a few seconds, but I blinked to clear my vision.

For a few heartbreaking seconds, no cat either noticed, or cared. Then, Shadekit burst from a clump of bushes, purring, and ran towards me.

"Flowerkit's outside!"

Then cats surrounded me, Moonkit and Shadekit sitting beside me, Icepool licking my head fiercely, Squirrelflight talking to me, and everyone pressing in on all sides.

Instead of feeling happy, fear thundered in me. I felt trapped, as my heart beat faster as if I had no room to move. I tried to move away as blood rushed in my ears but pelts and the bodies of my clanmates met my every turn. Scents overwhelmed me, and I felt the chocking feeling in me intensify.

"Stay back!" I hissed, trying to curl into a ball, although my trembling made it hard.

The chatter stopped and Shadekit blinked at me, alarmed. 

"Flowerkit?" Moonkit asked softly.

My heart was still thrashing as I turned and ran. Everything around me was blurry, my hind leg was burning, my chest heaving, my eye stinging from the wind blowing against it as my ears and fur were blew backwards.

I stopped in a familiar looking clearing and ran on top of the massive boulder in the center. My bones felt drained and weak. I had no idea where I was, but my heart urged me to be alone. I wanted to be by myself in the cool, quiet empty meadow. With no cat with-

I shrieked as I spotted a cat beneath the boulder.

It was the cat from my dream.
