You were in love with your best friend. You didn't mean for it to happen but how can you control how you feel?
You only knew you were in love because of the way you so easily got lost in her green eyes.
Or by the way, her touch made you feel electric. Your stomach would feel fluttery.
Your hands would get sweaty, and your heart would race.
You didn't mean for it to happen. You couldn't control it.
So when Ava told you she had a girlfriend she broke your heart without even knowing it.
But you put on a brave face, telling her that you were happy for her.
Because you couldn't tell her about your feelings.
You wouldn't tell her.
You couldn't risk it. Losing her friendship.
So you just dealt with the pain.
Dealt with the way you wanted to gouge your eyes out anytime you saw them together.
Knowing deep deep down that this was partially your fault for not confessing sooner.
But now you definitely wouldn't. Ava made it clear she didn't want to be with you.
It didn't help that she didn't notice.
You had never been confident. That was your flaw.
So you were never confident enough to tell Ava how you felt.
You have almost done it many times.
One of your attempts was putting flowers in her locker with a heart-shaped chocolate box with a note asking her out.
You chickened out last minute.
Then when it was February, you wanted to get her something for every day of February.
You would've put a letter in her locker first of February, then another the next.
Until the gifts advanced to stuffed animals.
The it would have been jewelry until you asked her out, the day before Valentine's Day.
Again, you chickened out.
At Christmas time you were so close to kissing her.
You were both under the mistletoe, and you both leaned in after agreeing you couldn't mess up a tradition.
Your palms were sweating as you clutched at your pants.
Your heart was beating out your chest, with beads of sweat threatening to fall.
Just as your lips were about to touch..
You chickened out.
You dodged and kissed her cheek.
Giving a fake smile as you rushed to the bathroom to calm yourself down.
Now here you were at a housewarming party for Ava and her girlfriend, and you didn't even try to act happy.
In fact, you looked biter. Anyone who got a good look at you could tell.
You had a drink in hand as you stood out on the porch.
You heard footsteps behind you and turned slightly to see Ava who smiled at you.
You didn't reciprocate.
Then she spoke words that shocked you.
"I've seen the way you look at me when you think I don't notice."
