Goodbye.
Goodbye was a word you were well acquainted with.
Because every time you trusted someone enough to really see you, all of you.
They left.
So you stopped trusting so easily.
That's why when you met Elizabeth, you kept her on a very long leash, far from your heart.
She could tell, by the way you avoided talking about yourself, or by the way you always avoided answering questions about your family.
She didn't know why you were like that, and obviously, you didn't answer when she asked.
But she was patient, more patient than anyone you knew, so you were suspicious as to why she was trying so hard.
So when you asked why her answer shocked you. "Everyone needs someone, I'd like to be that for you."
Now you'd have thought that would've brought your walls down.
It didn't.
All it did was make you push her further away.
It did make you feel bad when you ignored her texts and calls, but you couldn't— wouldn't allow yourself to be hurt again.
And you constantly told yourself that she would give up soon.
She didn't.
And the harder she tried the more distant you were.
And she realized that, so she stopped trying, as hard.Less calls.
Less texts.
Less random visits.
It was what you wanted, so why did it hurt so much?
But a part of you was celebrating because you dodged a bullet.
Right?
You continued with your daily routine; going to work, going to the park silently judging people, then going to your favorite restaurant, then back home. Sometimes stopping at your favorite bar.
Now here you were going to the bar, only you weren't expecting to see Lizzie there.
Especially not with some guy who you thought looked like a knockoff Jesus.
But there she was, she looked like she was enjoying herself, the way her hand was on his arm.
But the sight made your stomach twist, and not in a good way.
You ignored them both as you sat down at the bar, ordering your favorite drink.
It wasn't hard for you to keep your eyes off of Lizzie as ignoring people was your specialty.
So you busied yourself looking at the woman who was eyeing you up and down.
It might have been easy for you to ignore Lizzie for her it was the opposite.
She noticed you the second you came in. She noticed the way you looked how perfect you looked.
She had your outfit thirty seconds of you being in there; a t-shirt with a flannel your navy blue jeans and the Converse you always wore.
It hurt to see that you didn't even spare a second glance, what hurt more was that you didn't even try to talk to her.
You hadn't tried to talk to her for two months, yet she still texted good morning and good night.
You replied, Sometimes, sometimes you didn't.
After fifteen minutes of her trying to get your attention didn't work. She excused herself from Robbie, walking away before she got a response to grab you and drag you outside.
"What the hell, Elizabeth?!" You pulled out of her grip, and she glared at you.
"Don't 'what the hell' me! What the hell you! Why haven't you been talking to me?" There was a sadness in her voice, you heard it clear as day, but that didn't stop you from saying this.
"Have you ever considered I don't want to talk to you?"
That was a lie. A very big lie. You wanted to talk to her all the time, but you got in your own way.
"Why are you so keen on pushing me away?" She asked trying to ignore how hurt was by that comment.
"Because you'll leave me the second I let you in." She looked at you as if you had grown two heads.
"What?! I've been waiting for you for eight months to let me in! And you still think I'd leave?"
She was now on the verge of tears and you hated yourself for that.
But it hurt her even more when she saw no emotion in your eyes.
You were emotional, but you learned how to hide them. Too good at times, so it looked like you didn't care.
"Yes. I do." You wanted to take it back immediately but you didn't, because a part of you still believed it.
She looked at you for a few seconds, a tear, slipped from her eye as she wiped it away she chuckled
without humor."fine. You want me to be the villain? I'll be the villain, I'll leave. I won't try to talk to you anymore."
You wanted to take it back. Say sorry but you said nothing. And that's what she was waiting for, for you to tell her to stay.
You still stayed silent so she with a heavy sigh, gave you a sad smile, "Goodbye Y/N."
And she turned and walked away. You looked after her, silently begging for her to turn around, but she never did.
And a tear fell from your eye as you watched her walk farther and farther from your life.
