Y/N had never been one for haunted houses

Y/N had never been one for haunted houses. The jump scares, the eerie sounds, the actors leaping out from dark corners—it all felt a little too real. But when Kehlani invited her to the town's legendary Halloween haunted attraction, "The Asylum of Shadows," she couldn't say no. Not with Kehlani's brown eyes shining with excitement, practically daring her to go along.

"Come on," Kehlani said, grinning as they walked toward the towering structure draped in fog and covered in ghastly decorations. The faint echoes of screams drifted from inside, and Y/N's heart skipped a beat.

"Are you sure we need to do this?" Y/N asked, only half-joking. "It looks... intense."

"Oh, don't tell me you're backing out now," Kehlani teased, grabbing Y/N's hand and squeezing it playfully. "I'll be right there the whole time. Just hold on to me if you get scared."

That was enough to convince her. They joined the line of people waiting to enter, a mix of nervous laughter and excited whispers filling the air. The place had a reputation for being the best haunted attraction in town, set up in an abandoned asylum on the outskirts, its halls filled with actors playing the parts of tortured spirits and mad doctors.

The air turned colder as they stepped inside, the flickering lights casting long shadows across the peeling walls and rusty fixtures. An actor dressed as a deranged nurse staggered past, her face twisted in a disturbing grin, her gaze never leaving them. Y/N clutched Kehlani's hand a little tighter, feeling her pulse quicken.

They wound through narrow hallways draped in cobwebs, their shoes echoing on the old, creaky floors. Each room they entered was more horrifying than the last—a dimly lit operating room with blood-stained walls, a ward lined with empty, twisted hospital beds, each with a mannequin lying still as though they'd been abandoned mid-treatment.

A figure in a doctor's coat, his face concealed behind a cracked surgical mask, lurked in the corner, muttering something under his breath. He turned to them, his head tilting at an unnatural angle, his gaze pinning them in place.

"Run," he hissed.

Y/N didn't need to be told twice. She grabbed Kehlani's hand and pulled her down the hall, their laughter mingling with their screams as they dashed through the asylum.

"Having fun yet?" Kehlani called, her voice breathless with laughter as they turned a corner and entered a new room—this one with walls covered in eerie handprints, each one dripping red.

"I'll let you know when my heart stops racing," Y/N said, laughing nervously as she took in the strange, shadowy figures painted on the walls. They looked like they were reaching out, clawing for something, their faces twisted in silent screams.

Kehlani looked over at her, her eyes glinting. "Stay close," she murmured, her tone suddenly serious, though a smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

Just then, a loud bang echoed through the room, and the lights flickered, plunging them into near darkness. A low, menacing growl came from somewhere in the shadows, and Y/N felt Kehlani pull her closer. "Did you hear that?" Kehlani whispered, their voice low.

Y/N nodded, her throat dry. "Yeah... let's keep moving."

They inched forward, the room closing in around them. A ghostly figure—a woman in a torn hospital gown, her face obscured by her matted hair—appeared suddenly at the edge of the light, her arms outstretched. She moved slowly toward them, her steps jerking as if she was being pulled by an invisible force.

Y/N felt a shiver crawl up her spine, her hand tightening around Kehlani's. "Okay, she looks a little too real."

The woman let out a bone-chilling scream, then lunged forward, sending them scrambling through the doorway and into the next hall. They burst out into the open space, laughter bubbling up as they tried to catch their breath.

"You were right," Y/N admitted, her cheeks flushed from the thrill. "This is actually kind of fun."

Kehlani beamed, her brown eyes bright with excitement. "See? I told you. Now, let's see if we can make it through the final room. Rumor has it, it's the scariest part."

They followed the hallway into the last room, which looked like an eerie recreation of a patient's cell. The walls were scratched with messages—"HELP ME," "THEY'RE WATCHING," "NO WAY OUT"—scrawled in a frantic, red script. A single bed with torn sheets sat in the center of the room, a dim light swinging overhead, casting ghostly shadows.

Just as they took a step inside, the door slammed shut behind them, locking them in. Y/N's pulse raced, and she felt Kehlani's hand tighten around hers.

A soft, chilling voice filled the air, echoing through the room. "You shouldn't have come here... you'll never leave now."

The bed started to shake, and the shadows on the walls seemed to twist and writhe, coming alive as they stretched toward them. Kehlani pulled Y/N closer, her expression a mix of excitement and a little fear. "Okay, maybe this place is actually haunted."

Just then, the lights cut out completely, leaving them in total darkness. Y/N clutched Kehlani's arm, her breath shallow. "Lani, what if—"

Before she could finish, the lights flickered back on, and the room was empty. The door creaked open slowly, inviting them to step out.

Kehlani let out a breathless laugh, their cheeks flushed as she looked at Y/N. "We did it. Survived the Asylum."

Y/N grinned, her own heart still racing. "Barely." She turned, and for a moment, she thought she saw a shadowy figure watching them from the edge of the hallway. But when she blinked, it was gone.

They exited the haunted attraction, their laughter ringing in the cool night air as they walked back down the path.

As they neared the parking lot, Y/N couldn't help but glance back at the Asylum of Shadows, a chill running down her spine. For a moment, she thought she saw a figure in the window, a shadowy silhouette watching them leave. But when she looked again, it was just a trick of the light.

Kehlani nudged her playfully. "Thinking about going back next year?"

Y/N looked at her, then back at the ominous structure, and laughed. "Only if I have you by my side."

Kehlani's brown eyes sparkled as she wrapped an arm around Y/N's shoulders. "Always."
