Neuvillette's POV

It was rather a boring night, with nothing left for me to do after completing the paperwork. Do not misunderstand me, for I did not intend to say that I was ungrateful for my role as Fontaine's Chief Justice. I enjoyed the luxuries granted to me with the title, yet the grave responsibilities and burdens I lifted upon my shoulders were anything but shallow.

Although I was done with my work for today, I had to stay in my office in case of dire emergencies, such as the sudden commencement of a trial at the Opera Epiclese or Furina requesting a meeting with me—even though she is currently in Snezhnaya for official business. However, some company would be nice...

I sighed, giving in to the sorrow of my loneliness. I rested my arms on my desk, gently resting my head on my arms. Maybe I could pass the time by napping in my office. Besides, if any emergency cases were to require my presence, then I should hear a couple of knocks on my door before the Gardes barge in to my office, so I should be awake by then.

I closed my eyes, succumbing to a dangerous enemy known as loneliness. Well, I did until an unrequested visitor interrupted my sleep.

"Oh, am I interrupting something?"

Ah, that voice...

I immediately lifted my head, trying to act as if he didn't startle me, for I did not expect to find him here.

"H-how—no, when did you come in?"

The stammer gave it away, stripping me of my gracefulness and elegance. As I expected, my eyes fell upon a pair of grayish blue ones—beautiful and unique ones, indeed. A smug look unfolded on his pale visage.

"Where are my greetings, hm? You make it seem as if I'm an unwanted guest." He pouted, placing a cup of coffee on my desk. "Do I have to knock if I'm a close friend of the Chief Justice?"

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Yes. Yes, you have to knock, Wriothesley. What if I was attending to official matters with the crucial figures of Teyvat?"

"You were napping, anyway, and I did not wish to wake you up." Wriothesley sighed, sitting at the other side of my table. "Is it my fault now for wanting to give you a little break? I even bought you a coffee."

Ah, right. I forgot about it.

I nodded for him in gratitude. "Thank you, Wriothesley. You really didn't have to trouble yourself," I said as I placed the official documents away, diverting from the possibility of spilling the coffee on such vital documents, then I held the cup in my hands.

Heat bounced from the ceramic mug to my hands, and I savored that warmth before looking at Wriothesley once again only to find a proud look on his face, and I felt the same warmth... just by looking at his endearing smile.

"So? Is the Chief Justice fond of my coffee?"

I carefully lifted the mug off the table, pressing it against my lips in an attempt to hide my smile. Wriothesley was the type of person to have a friendly and collected personality, yet I admired the way he handled emergencies with utmost urgency and responsibility. I respected him—no, he quickly and easily earned my respect. I hated to admit it, but I was thankful for this unexpected companionship.
