My heart beat in a fast tempo within in my chest. It is just an audition. My thoughts eat away my miniscule sliver confidence. This audition could pave the way of the rest of my life, I think to myself. I am auditioning for the lead role in a new Broadway musical known as, Soul Sister. It was apparently about a Spanish girl by the name of Catia, tries to learn the craft of acting in musicals. She decides to get help from the young, strict, and famous graduate of Juliard named Jonathan Garrett. He doesn't take to kindly to Catia's enthusiasm. Jonathan believes that an actor should be composed and charming. They first don't take each other very well. They soon begin to fall in love with each other and learn lessons from one another. Being serious about what you do is important, but letting loose and being happy isn't the end of that.
Then I hear the director yelling, "Next!"
I appear from stage right and I try to keep my nervous feeling at bay by walking confidently onto the stage.
There are three people before me. At the right, a woman with long reddish-brown hair and a youthful face. Maybe in her late thirties. On the left, a man with short black hair. The same age bracket as well. In the middle sat a man I had an inkling about being the director. He possessed Sandy blonde hair that curled at his ears, be wore large glasses, and stared right at me.
"So what's your name?" he asks.
"My name is Quinn Estell," I answer calmly and then remember to smile.
He then asks, "Is that a stage name, Quinn?"
I laugh, "No that's my real name, sir."
"I'm Carmichael Schmidt, the writer and director. At my right is Maxwell Bialystok (man named Maxwell waves) is my producer. To my right is my casting director, Leah Blume."
Leah smiles at me genuinely. I try not to laugh again. The producer and casting director had names almost identical to that of the main characters in the Producers.
Then Leah whispers something to Carmichael and he says, "Alright, Leah."
"So Quinn, have you ever been on Broadway (I shake my head no)? Do you have any experience in acting or on the stage?" Leah asks.
I reply, " I was almost in every musical at my high school and I portrayed Elphaba and Eponine. I am a graduate of Juliard. I also do make-up for shows.
Leah nods, "So what are going to singing for us today, Quinn?"
"Defying Gravity."
I take a deep breath and the piano behind me begins playing. The lyrics expel from my vocal chords. This song really allows you to be passionate. When it is concluded, no standing ovations or clapping, just simple compliments.
Then Carmichael takes over again and hands me a script.
"I'm going to read Jonathan's part and you, Catia's...We're going to be fighting about my methods of teaching and my out look on life."
He cues and I start, sure to do my best Spanish accent, "Don Garret, I live with happiness in my heart because I believe life will be better."
As Jonathan, Carmichael, begins by scoffing at me, " Believing things will be better? You've got to be kidding me, Catie! You make it better! Believing is for worthless dreamers!"
" Again Jonathan, I mean, Don Garrett, my name is Catia! And in this life, according to you, we all need to be worthless dreamers!"
As the script says, I stomp out and Carmichael says "End scene...We'll call you Quinn...Next!"
I walk out with some relief...I feel confident in this audition. Unlike most others, I'd left feeling even more in pain.
I take the subway back to my large apartment in Manhattan. It is mid-morning and I'm feeling like I need a snack. I head to the grocery and grab a granola bar as well as a Snapple Arnold Palmer. I walk the rest of the way home which was only a short few blocks away from the apartment. When I get into my apartment, I begin to turn on some showtunes and break out to song. In a matter of hours, I would be heading to a performance of An American in Paris. Also, maybe, just maybe, I'd be one of the few that is given the opportunity to be performing in one of the many theatres for Broadway around town. My confidence didn't waver even after it was all over. Tomorrow, I'd discover if I had earned a callback.
