Chapter 17

This is the same chapter as before just in Luz's POV

I had stayed late in Science, trying to catch Luna up on what we were doing, since she was new here. After I finished explaining our topic for the unit, Luna and I joined Sarina, who was waiting outside the classroom.

"Hi Sarina," I greeted.

"Hey cockroach." Luna said behind me. We walked together, chatting about random things. Right before we entered the cafeteria, I saw something infuriating.

There was a guy standing way too close to Amity, and she was leaning against the lockers, her eyes closed, eyebrows furrowed in fear.

"What are you doing, bitch!" I shouted at him.

After cursing and yelling at him, I watched as he ran like a scared rat, before turning to Amity. I could see the fear clear in her eyes as she sank to the ground.

"Are you okay?" I asked, trying to calm her down. She responded by sobbing on my shoulder. Luna and Sarina stood in front of us, awkwardly watching the scene unfolding before them.

After muttering excuses, they ran off to who knows where, leaving a crying Amity and I alone in the hallway.

I was about to hug her when she whispered "Shut up."

"What?" I asked, confused on why she said that.

"I was talking to myself." She muttered through sniffles. I took this as a sign to gently wrap my arms around her and pull her in for a hug. I actually don't know why I wanted to make her feel better. Honestly, I expected her to pull away when I had hugged her. My past self could've never imagined that I would be hugging Amity Blight, much less trying to make her feel better.

We hugged for what seemed like forever, before I pulled away and smiled at her. Although her face was tear-stained, she was smiling.

"Thank you, Luz. Honestly, I'm kind of amazed with how fearless you are. You've done things I could never do." She said, her eyes still glazed with tears. I raised my eyebrows at her at asked, "You goin' soft on me, Blight?"

"In your dreams, Noceda." She said, smirking.

We both went to the bathroom, where Amity washed her face. She came out looking much better than before, and we walked towards the library. When we reached the entrance, I saw both Sarina and Luna looking annoyed and shouting at each other. I only caught a few words, and didn't think much of it. However, Amity, who was closer, looked like she'd seen a ghost.

"What'd they say?" I asked, and she muttered something unintelligible.

Sarina and Luna were engrossed in their conversation about whatever, so I decided to sneak up on them.

"Sup guys." I said from behind them, and both of them shrieked as I winced.

"Don't ever do that Luz." Luna said, frowning at me. I only grinned, and then asked, "Whatcha talking about?"

Luna and Sarina both turned pale, and Luna shoved something that looked like a phone into her pocket.

"Uh-um we were talking about books?" Luna said questioningly, turning to Sarina. Sarina looked at her and then nodded vigorously, asking, "So who's your favorite character in Azura?"

Luna had a confused look on her face, as she tried to understand the context.

"Azura, I guess?" She slowly said.

I grinned at their poor attempts to hide whatever, but decided to drop it. They probably were talking about something private. I shrugged and turned towards Amity and grabbed her hand as we walked to the cafeteria.
