CHAPTER 38

My body froze on the spot.

I didn't move as Maddox travelled closer through the water. Just great! He probably thought I wouldn't be in the emerald cave. But he looked at me and heat swirled in my chest. His sharp blue eyes roamed my naked body.

Holy moly.

I'm supposed to be moving, splashing into the pond, and submerging my head beneath the water in an attempt to cover my body.

But I didn't.

My body didn't budge from the rock — revealing myself, bare tits, and all.

Maddox stood still with the water stopping at his waistline. His stare was penetrating, gazing beyond my flesh and into my soul. I sucked in a breath, my chest heaving. I could see his eyes gazing at my neck and wandered down my naked breasts. His eyeballs stuck on there for a few heated seconds that made my flesh ripple with goosebumps. His gaze travelled lower, to my abdomen, and then to my waist.

I clenched my thighs together; he couldn't get a good view of my kitty down below. He winced, robbed from his satisfaction. I felt him dissecting me with his eyes. Studying my naked body, and I allowed him to look with pleasure. To take me in. To sear my body into his brain.

I didn't know why, but this was the most erotic moment I had in my life.

His eyes locked with mine, and I could see his pupils dilating before me — turning black.

The air crackled with a heavy energy that made my breath heave. It was hot, thick, and full of yearning.

I swallowed hard.

My heart racing.

I needed to break this spell before I fell under it completely.

I quickly slipped into the pond. The water was cool against my flushed skin. I could see Maddox Adam's apple bob up and down as he sauntered closer.

"I didn't know anyone would come here," I murmured.

He stopped and frowned. "I'm sorry. Hardly anyone enters the caves. I usually come alone."

I glanced at the entrance and drifted away from him. Suddenly, I felt self-conscience. "Oh, I didn't know. It's my first time here. I'll go."

He turned his head. "No," he said instantly. "Please... stay."

I blinked and thought about it for a split second. "Okay," I said and floated back, keeping a respectable distance away from him.

Maddox exhaled. He looked slightly uncomfortable, searching for words to say.

"You need to work on your shifting."

I glared at him. "Are we really going to talk about how bad of a wolf I am?"

He cleared his throat. "Uhm... No."

Clearly, he wasn't good at small talk at all. A tiny smile ghosted my lips.

"This cave is beautiful," I said, and looked at the walls with the tiny gems of green. "I've never seen emeralds so up close like this before." Teaching him how to start a casual conversation.

"Yes, the caves are here for centuries. Untouched by the greed of humans," he explained.

I nodded. "Yeah, if people knew this place existed. They'll wipe the cave clean and demolish it for mining."

"Humans don't appreciate nature," he scowled.

"Nah uh, not all humans," I countered. "There're are plenty that appreciate what nature brings."
