Caiden reaches Caitlyn's house, wondering if he did the right thing. He didn't want a divorce, and now that she was pregnant again. He couldn't lose either one; they had already lost one child, and he'd be damned if he lost another. Nailani's words struck a cord within him; he guessed the saying that truth hurts is accurate. He walks into his sister's house without knocking, surprised to see his mother there.
"Caiden, what are you doing here?"
He sighs and tries not to roll his eyes. His mother never wanted him to marry Nailani. He remembered her telling him to break it when they became serious.
Caiden was getting dressed to meet Nailani. He couldn't wait to see her. He had never said I love you to someone he was dating, but he wanted the world to know how much he loved and cared for her. But, tonight, he was gonna make sure she knew. She would be cooking for him at her place tonight; it would just be the two of them having dinner and a movie at home. He couldn't think of a better way to spend time. As he leaves the guest house and makes his way to the front to get to his car, his mom stops him. "Where are you headed, Cai?" she asks him. "To meet Nai for dinner. Did you need something?" he replied. "Are you really still seeing that girl, Caiden? I don't think it's a very good idea for you to be dating her." "Ma, really this again?" "Cai,.." "No, Mom, you liked her enough to let her stay here, but now what?" "That was before you two started dating," his mom replies. "Well, Mom, I don't know what to tell you." "You need to break up with her." "I'm not listening to this; I'm leaving," Caiden says. He leaves his mom standing there and goes to Nailani's apartment. She notices that something is wrong when he gets there. "Hey, what's wrong?" Nailan asks. "Nothing, something smells good in here. What did you make?" he says, changing the subject. Not wanting to push, she answers his question. "Homemade lasagna is my grandmother's recipe. "It smells delicious," he says, pulling her close for a kiss. "Can I have dessert first?" he says before he kisses her again. "Cai, stop," she says as he leaves a trail of kisses down her neck.
His memory is disrupted by his mother asking again,
"Cai, what are you doing here?"
"I'm here to talk to my sister. Is that okay with you?" he asks with an attitude.
"Caiden Ezra Jacobs, you watch your tude when speaking to me, young man," his mom says.
"Look, Mom, I really do not have time to deal with you today," Caiden replies. He really didn't want to deal with her today.
"Look, just because you and that girl are having issues doesn't mean you take it out on me. "
"Ma, can you not just for this once, can you not?" Caiden says, getting more frustrated. He doesn't need this right now; Nai was trying to leave him; they were expecting a child. He was feeling so many things and couldn't deal.
"I was just leaving anyway," his mother says. She gets up, grabs her purse before hugging Caitlyn, and hugs her son.
"I don't know what's going on but know I love you son," she says
"Love you too, ma," he says
"Wow, bro, what was that about? I thought you would be picking up Nai today," Caitlyn says
"I did, but Nan G was there already, and Nai was sharing some news with her," Caiden says, throwing himself onto Caitlyn's sofa.
"What kind of news?" Caitlyn asks
"We're having a baby." He whispers so low that Caitlyn thinks she heard wrong.
"What, wait, did you say you're having a baby?"
"Yep, and she wasn't even going to tell me."
"What makes you say that?" Caitlyn asks
"She told Nana G it was a secret."
"Okay, but did she tell Nana G that she wouldn't tell you?"
"No, she said she was gonna talk to the therapist about how to tell me and that she just found out."
"So why do you think she wouldn't tell you?"
"She asked for a divorce," Caiden says
"She what?" Caitlyn didn't want to believe it. She knew her brother and best friend loved each other even though her brother hadn't been the best spouse, but she did try to warn Nai before they started dating.
"Yes, she said I was killing her," Caiden says dolefully
"Wow," was all Caitlyn could say; she knew that Nai had her own demons and that Caiden had hurt her too many times.
"Wow, Cait, is that all you can say?"
"Caiden, you have to take responsibility for the pain you caused."
"So, you think that she should divorce me?"
"No, of course not. I would like to see y'all work it out, especially since you are going to be parents, ' Caitlyn says.
"Yes, that's why I told her if she goes through with the divorce, I'll sue for full parental custody," Caiden says
"Cai no!!" Caitlyn exclaimed
"What?" he says with a shrug of his shoulders
"You think that's going to make her stay? You are just going to push her more away."
"I'm thinking about what's best for my child; she tried to kill herself twice."
"Once," Caitlyn says, "you know the first time was not on purpose."
"Well, it was one too many, so if she goes through with this divorce, she'll lose me and the baby."
"Cai, this is the wrong move. I don't think you should do this," Caitlyn says.
"You prefer I lose my wife and child; I could have lost them both due to her carelessness," he says in frustration. He thought his sister would be on his side.
"Aren't you partially responsible for your carelessness?" Caitlyn says, trying to get her brother to see reason.
"That's not fair, Cait."
"What you are doing is not fair either, Caiden."
"I just don't want to lose my family," Caiden says
"Well, were you thinking about losing your family when you were with Lola?" Caitlyn ask
"Why do you and Nana G keep reminding me of my mistakes, damn," Caiden says, frustratingly that all the important people in his life seem to be against him.
"Caiden, that was three days ago; after the first time, it stops being a mistake and becomes a choice," Caitlyn says, frustrated with her brother.
"I know, Cait, okay, I know, but it was the last time."
"Pssh, you said that the last time, Cai," Caitlyn says.
"What should I do," he says, sounding defeated.
"For now, let her go," Caitlyn says softly. She would love to see her best friend and brother work things out, but Nailani was serious about divorcing him. It might be better for her future niece or nephew if they went their separate ways. Neither sibling says anything, letting a wave of silence engulf them. It's neither awkward nor comfortable; they are just there, both dealing with the sadness of the situation Caiden had put them in.
