Three days later
A lot had happened in three days, the paperwork to evict Nailani's mother and her family from the house. She had the DNA test done by two different labs the day before, and the test was rushed, so she should receive a phone call about the results soon. Jamila dropped some of her things off at the hotel. She wasn't as angry at Ms. Sonya anymore; she knew, like her grandmother, that their hearts were in the right place. Ms. Sonya did try to contact her; she was the one to blow her off, plus she decided she didn't want to spend her time reconnecting with people who cared for her in anger. As Nailani is getting ready for the day her phone goes off. She looked down to see Janessa. Why would she be calling, she thought. She picks up the phone,
"Hello," she says on her phone.
"Hi Nailani, I was wondering if you'd like to join me for breakfast," Janessa says
"Oh, um, sure," Nailani says, unsure.
"Don't feel pressure. I'd just thought we could have breakfast, just the two of us, and get to know each other." Janessa says
"Sure, I'd be happy to join you," Nailani
"Great, want to meet at Mimi's Café?" Janessa asks
"Yes, In about an hour?" Nailani asks
"Yes, that works," Janessa says
"See you soon," Nailani says
After saying goodbye, they hung up, and Nailani continued to get ready for the day. She takes out her journal to write. She has written more in the last three days than in the past five years; it astonished her because she used to journal a lot. Journaling these past few days has been therapeutic. She had another session with Dr. Robin in two days; she had one with her right before she finally called Caitlyn back. She needed her to stop calling her because she really didn't want to speak to her right now, and she knew Caiden now knew she wasn't with his grandmother. He was going to be angry, and she would let him know where she was After setting up her appointments with the doctor so he could attend checkups. She wanted to talk to a lawyer first before she had to face him.
An hour later, Nailani sits across from Janessa.
"Thank you for this; I'm sorry it took this long to officially meet you; your grandmother talked about you a lot," Janessa says when the waiter walks away.
"So you got to meet my grandmother," Nailani says
"Yes, before she got sick," Janessa says
"Hmm"
"I know you took care of her in her final days. Xavier really would have helped if I was not sick," Janessa says dolefully.
"It's fine. It was the least I could do since My Grandparents raised me, and I did disappear there for a while," Nailani says dejectedly.
"Yeah, Xavier told me you moved away right after high school and didn't stay in touch for a while." Nailani just shrugged her shoulder; she hadn't really thought anyone but her grandparents cared.
"You know we're all glad you're here," Janessa says when the silence becomes too much.
"You guys keep saying that, but why? Huh, why are you all glad I'm here? My egg donor has taken over the house, my actual parents who raised me left me, I'm pregnant, alone, and about to go through a divorce and custody battle, and I feel like Every time I turn around, another shoe is about to drop," Nailani says airing out her frustration and grievances. But she suddenly stands up after realizing what she said.
