Chapter 12: Betrayed

Nailani looks back from the letter to Sonya to the letter to her brother and Mr. Clyde. They all look at her quietly as if waiting for her reaction. She doesn't have one. She is ultimately in shock; who was Alex, and Mrs. Sonya could be her grandmother. What??!!! She thought.

The office was silent as Nailani tried to process what she read, and the other three waited for her response. Naialni breaks the silence;

"Is this true?" she finally asks, handing Sonya the letter

"We think so," Mr. Clyde says, though he had a very strong feeling that it was true. "we'd like to do a Grandparent test between you and Sonya."

Nailani nods her before speaking.

"So if my father might be this Alexander guy-" Ms Sonya took a sharp breath; Nailani looked at her and looked away.

"Who's your father?" Nailani asks, turning to Xavier

Xavier gets nervous and fidgets with his tie. Nailani squints her eyes.

"Xavier Martin, you know who your father is. Have you known all this time?" Nailani says, standing up

"Yes," he finally says

"Who?"

"Mike"

"Mike who"

"Nai!" Xavier says exasperatedly

"Not Mike, your mother's husband," Nailani exclaimed

He turns his head, confirming her words.

"What the hell, is that why you let your family move into my house" Nailani finally explodes

"What? Of course not," he says defensively.

"Yeah, right. You had your parents, and they wanted the house, so you said yes."

"I thought you were okay with it," Mr Clyde says, looking from Xavier to Sonya.

"We figured she wouldn't mind if they stayed awhile," Xavier says

"Ms. Sonya okayed it"

"You okayed them staying there," Nailani says, looking back and forth between the both of them, and she couldn't believe this crap. Xavier's phone goes off for the fourth time in a row.

"Mr. Xavier, are you gonna get that," Mr. Clyde says

"No, it's not important." Just as it rings again, Nailani notices the name it says mom, and she glares at him.

"Answer it, Xavier. It's clearly important she keeps calling back to back" Nailani says

Xavier looks at his phone and at his sister and says. As soon as he says hello, she is shouting at him.

"Xavier David Martin, WHAT DID YOU DO? WHAT DID YOU TELL HER WHY? DID Nailani SHOW UP TO THE HOUSE YESTERDAY? YOU BETTER FIX IT NOW. IF SHE TAKES THE HOUSE, YOUR FAMILY WILL HAVE NO PLACE TO GO. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT"

"What!!!" Nailani says she was feeling a host of emotions, betrayal, anguish, and rage, but mostly overwhelmed, and she started to hyperventilate.

"Mom, I have to go,," Xavier replies before turning towards Nailani "Nai, I swear I can explain" Xavier says, but she does nothing. She doubles over and has trouble breathing. 

"Nailani, dear, are you?" Sonya says but, Nailani holds her hands up, not wanting to speak to Ms. Sonya right now because she couldn't believe she okayed Xavier's foolishness. Xavier calls for Janya to come into the office with water when she notices Nailani is on the verge of a panic attack. She walks over to her, kneels down, and starts helping her regulate her breath as the other three watch on.
