Announcement

Toothless looked at Shimmer, shock etched on his face. "Really?! I'm going to be a father?!" He asked excitedly. "Yes, my love, you're going to be a father," she replied, laughing softly. "What's so funny?" He asked. "You are, dear. It makes me happy to see you so excited. It sort of reminds me of when you tried that mating ritual at the beach. You look goofy, and I love it," she replied, smiling at him, her gaze full of affection. "You just had to bring that up, didn't you?" He asked her. "Yeah. It's a happy memory," she said. "Honestly, even if Hiccup hadn't scared you off, I would have thought that I blew my chance to gain your affection," he admitted. "Toothless, you gained my affection the moment we met, I just wasn't sure how to express that, since I've been mostly alone my whole adult life," she said softly, nuzzling his snout. "Well, you're not alone anymore, Shimmer. You have so many friends, and you've got me, and you'll have our cubs, too," Toothless replied, affectionately licking her cheek. "When should we announce the news to the kingdom?" She asked him. "Whenever you feel up to it. Right now, though, you need to get some rest," he said, and she laid her head on her paws, falling asleep a few minutes later.

When Shimmer awoke, Toothless was asleep beside her, and she decided to let him sleep. She stretched before she left the den to observe the kingdom for a bit. She didn't hear Toothless approaching from behind her, then he licked her face, making her purr softly. "How'd you sleep?" He asked her. "I slept just fine, my love. How about you?" She asked him. "I slept well. I fell asleep not long after you did, actually. It was a long day yesterday," he said. "Yeah, it sure was," she agreed, gazing at him lovingly. "So, are you planning on going to the nursery again today?" He asked. "Yeah, after we make the announcement," she said. "Okay then," Toothless said, roaring loudly to get everyone's attention. "Shimmer and I have an announcement to make," he said loudly once everyone was paying attention. "That's right. We're going to be welcoming some new additions to our family soon," Shimmer added, matching Toothless' volume. The other dragons were silent for a moment as they processed the news, then they all began to cheer and offer their congratulations to the King and Queen of the Hidden World. The pair thanked everyone for their congratulations and went back into their den for a bit. 

"I'm going to rest for a few minutes before I head to the nursery. I'm a bit tired from making the announcement, combined with going to the nursery yesterday," Shimmer told Toothless. "I can tell. You look a little sleepy," he replied. Shimmer curled up on the floor, her tail curled protectively in front of her stomach, and drifted off to sleep. Toothless smiled and decided to find Stormfly and inform her that Shimmer likely wasn't going to be at the nursery that day. "I've heard that being pregnant really takes a lot out of the mother-to-be. I can check up on her in a little while, just to see how everything is going so far, if you want," she said. "I'd appreciate that, and I think Shimmer would as well. Thanks for understanding," he replied. "No problem, Your Majesty. I'll see you soon," she said, and Toothless nodded before he returned to the den to keep Shimmer company. When he got back, he found her awake, still lying in the same position as when he left. "Hey, my love. I changed my mind about going to the nursery today. I'm not sure that I could make it there and back today, and I'd rather not risk it," she said. "I understand. I was just talking to Stormfly. I had a feeling you were too tired to go to the nursery today, so I went out to find her and let her know. She offered to stop by and check up on you, just to see how everything's going so far, and I told her that we'd both appreciate it," he replied. "Thank you, my love. It'll be nice to know how everything is progressing so far," she said. They spent much of the day constructing their nest, since Shimmer felt more energized after her nap. "I'm happy with the progress we made with the nest today," she said with a yawn. "Me too, sweetheart," Toothless replied, just as Stormfly arrived.

"How have you been doing today, Your Majesty?" Stormfly asked Shimmer, who had assumed the same position she had been in after her nap. "Well, I took a quick nap after the announcement this morning, and I felt really energized afterwards, so Toothless and I worked on our nest for a while," she replied. Stormfly performed a few examinations, finding that Shimmer was in perfect health, and that she had nothing to worry about so far. "That's lovely to hear. I'm glad everything is going well so far," Shimmer said with a smile. "I'm happy to help out. I'll stop by again in about a month or so to see how you're doing," Stormfly said. "Sounds good. See you soon," Shimmer said. "See you soon, Your Majesty," Stormfly replied, bowing slightly before leaving. "You look beautiful," Toothless said. "Thanks. Whew, today was interesting, wasn't it?" Shimmer asked. "Yeah, it was," he replied. "I'm probably going to end up paying for it tomorrow, though," she commented. "I don't doubt that. Tomorrow's definitely going to be a do nothing day," Toothless joked. "Yeah, probably. I hate not being able to do much of anything," Shimmer said with frustration in her voice. "I know, but if you're not up to doing anything, then don't do anything. I don't want you to overexert yourself," he replied, nuzzling her snout. "You're right. I don't want anything to happen to our babies if I can help it," she replied with a smile.

In the middle of the night, both Toothless and Shimmer woke up to a strange sound coming from somewhere in the Hidden World. "What was that?" Shimmer asked nervously, curling her tail protectively in front of her stomach. "I don't know, but it didn't sound good," Toothless replied. "What if it's something dangerous? What if whatever the source of the sound is tries to kill us?" She asked, starting to breathe faster. "Honey, calm down. You're going to hyperventilate," he said, trying to calm her down. "I can't help it, my love! I'm really scared right now," she replied. "Would it help if you went to our secret cave?" He asked her. "Yeah. It's hidden pretty well, so I'd probably be a bit safer there. I would like to have someone there with me to help me with stuff, though," she said. "How about we ask Stormfly?" Toothless asked. "Ask me what?" Stormfly asked as she entered the den. "If you would come with me to a secret cave that Toothless found once, so that I feel safer," Shimmer said. "Sure, Your Majesty. When do you want to go?" Stormfly asked. "Right now, if we can," Shimmer replied. "Of course, Your Majesty. The sooner you get to safety, the better," Stormfly said, and she and Shimmer left for the secret cave. Toothless set about gathering several more dragons to help with his search for the source of the strange sound. Hookfang, Cloudjumper, Barf and Belch, Jasper, and Thornado agreed to help search for what had made the strange sound that had seemed to have been heard throughout the Hidden World.
