The Hidden World

Ever since Toothless left the Vikings of Berk, he'd been feeling homesick. Thankfully for him, he had his mate to help him adjust to life in the Hidden World. She was a Light Fury, who Toothless fell in love with the first time he saw her. Her name was Shimmer, due to the way that her scales seemed to shimmer in the light. All of the dragons missed their trainers, but they were able to adjust to life in the Hidden World pretty easily. Toothless, on the other hand, enjoyed all of the time he got to spend with Hiccup and the other Vikings much more than most of the other dragons, and so he had grown more attached to the humans. One day, he was lying in his den that he shared with Shimmer, thinking about Hiccup, and how he was able to help him fly again. At first, it was with Hiccup's help, then, more recently, on his own. Every so often, he'd look at his tail, think of his best friend, and sit around in a sad silence. On this particular day, he really wanted to visit Hiccup and Astrid and the other Vikings, which he brought up with Shimmer. "I'm not sure if that's a good idea. We did this in order to keep our species safe from dragon hunters. They're probably still trying to find us, and if any of us were to leave, it could expose the location of the Hidden World, which would defeat the purpose of it being called hidden," she replied, gently nuzzling the side of his head. "I know, and I know that it was a mutual choice between us and the Vikings," Toothless replied, avoiding looking at her.

"Toothless, I know how much you miss Hiccup, and I wish I could do something so you could see him again, and maybe someday we can visit him. It's just not safe yet," Shimmer said, nuzzling the side of his head again. "I know. I love you, and I don't want to put the other dragons in danger just because I want to visit a friend," he replied, licking her face affectionately. "I love you too," she said, lying down beside him. After a moment or two, there was a soft chirp at the entrance of the den, and Toothless got up to see who it was. "Hey," Cloudjumper said, dipping his head in respect. "Hi Cloudjumper," Toothless replied. "How are you doing?" Cloudjumper asked him. "I'm alright. How are things going with you and Kendra?" Toothless asked. "We're good. Kendra and I are discovering a lot of things that we have in common," he replied. "I'm happy for you guys!" Toothless said happily. "Thank you," Cloudjumper replied. "What brings you here, Cloudjumper?" Shimmer asked, padding up beside Toothless. "Well, Your Highness," Cloudjumper said, addressing both of them, making Toothless flinch slightly. He was never going to get used to that title, as he was King of the Hidden World, with Shimmer as his Queen. "I have noticed several suspicious ships sailing around in the fog, as if looking for something. They seem disoriented by the fog, but one of them is bound to come across an entrance to this place at some point," Cloudjumper explained.

"This is... unexpected news," Shimmer said quietly. "Humans are naturally curious, and they want to explore every corner of the world to satisfy that curiosity. Still, perhaps it is time for us to test the new defense system," Toothless said, and Shimmer nodded in agreement. Cloudjumper flew off to begin the process of sealing the entrances to the Hidden World, while Toothless and Shimmer oversaw the process. "I wish it were more peaceful here sometimes," Toothless remarked. "I agree. It was quite peaceful before all of the dragons returned, but I'm sure part of it is that they're still getting used to life here, since none of them have actually been here before," Shimmer crooned. "I can definitely understand that," he said, smiling when their eyes met. Toothless noticed a familiar blue and yellow dragon flying towards them and mentioned it to Shimmer.

Stormfly flew up next to Toothless, landing and swishing her tail anxiously. "Hi Stormfly. What's up?" Toothless asked. "Something feels off. I can't explain it, but something feels different in some way," she answered. "Well, we are sealing the entrances for the time being. Maybe that's it," Toothless replied, but Stormfly shook her head. "No. It feels almost like there's humans in here somewhere," she said, capturing Shimmer's attention. "How would they have gotten in?" She asked a bit sharply. "I have no idea. They can't be from one of the ships Cloudjumper saw because those ships were so disoriented," Stormfly said. "So they would need to have prior knowledge of where we are..." Shimmer replied, and Toothless' ears perked up. "What is it, my love?" Shimmer asked him with a hint of worry in her tone. "There's something familiar about whoever is here," he said somewhat distantly. "I got that feeling too. You don't think...?" Stormfly trailed off, and a tiny pinprick of fire caught Toothless' attention. "Look!" He said, making both Shimmer and Stormfly look at the tiny fire as well. Shimmer instinctively took up an aggressive stance, until Toothless told her that there was nothing to worry about yet. "Okay," she said, returning her gaze to the fire. A figure then emerged from the darkness of the cave where the fire was coming from, followed by another figure. Toothless instantly recognized the first figure, and Stormfly recognized the second, and they took off in the direction of the two familiar figures.

Toothless and Stormfly landed a short distance from the figures, just to be safe. "Hey buddy. How're you doing?" Hiccup asked, and Toothless sprinted over to him and knocked him to the ground, proceeding to start licking his face. "I missed you too, bud. This place has changed a lot since the last time I was here," Hiccup said. Astrid, meanwhile, was reuniting with Stormfly, who was happy to see her again. After a short time, Shimmer joined them, staying right next to Toothless. Reluctantly, she allowed both Hiccup and Astrid to gently pet her head, finding it more pleasant than she expected. After a few hours, the two Vikings left, saying that they would come back again when they got another chance. Stormfly returned to the medical cave, while Toothless and Shimmer returned to their den.

"Hey, wake up," Shimmer said randomly in the middle of the night, gently swatting Toothless with her wing. "Why?" He asked drowsily. "You'll see. Come on," she said, trotting out of the den before stopping to wait for him. After a few minutes, Toothless joined her, and she led him to where they usually sat and watched the everyday life in the Hidden World. Unlike it normally was, however, it was almost completely silent, and the blue, green, and purple lights on the walls of the cave were casting multicolored light all around the area. "It's so... peaceful," Toothless said in awe. "This is sort of what it was like before all the dragons came back," she said softly. "It's beautiful. I've never seen anything like this," he said softly. "Really? Nothing compares to this as far as beauty?" Shimmer asked him pointedly. "Nothing could ever be more beautiful than you are, Shimmer," he said. "Good answer," she replied with a smile. "I'm so glad I met you," Toothless said, causing Shimmer to purr softly. "I'm glad I met you, too," she replied, stretching her wings as if she were about to take off. "Wanna go for a flight, just the two of us?" She asked. "Yeah, I'd love to," he replied.

Toothless and Shimmer explored the Hidden World, taking in as much as they could, and afterward, they decided to race each other a few times, then they played hide-and-seek together. By the time they returned to their den, they were exhausted, quickly falling asleep for the night.

So, I got the idea of naming the Light Fury Shimmer because I noticed in some of the pictures of her that her scales looked like they shimmered like snow on a sunny winter day. Toothless and the Light Fury are pretty cute together, too. Until next time!
