IX. Butterflies
AUSTRALIA: August 2023
Oscar was sitting in front of his nana. They were just sitting at her porch and drinking a cup of coffee. Nana Piastri looked at him, she realized he was physically there but his mind was elsewhere.
She studied him. His eyes were staring at the cup and had a small smile on his face. And even not asking, she knew he was thinking about. She placed a cup on the table and reached out to him and tapped his leg.
He looked at her, "I'm sorry what was that nana?" he asked. She looked at him amusedly, "You got something in your mind Oscy?" she asked. He smiled innocently, "Is it that noticeable?" he asked.
Nana Piastri smirked, "It is. So, is it Liv?" she asked. Oscar's eyes widened in shock, "How did you..."
"You don't have to say anything. The moment you received her first sticky note, something changed in you. For the better."
"How do you know it did?"
She looked at him, he noted the genuine smile on her face. "How would you describe Olivia to someone who doesn't know her yet?"
"Nana-"
"Just answer the question Jack."
He looked at her in fear, "Uh- um... Liv? She's like a bouquet of happiness, spontaneity, and laughter. It's like I'm reading a book..." he paused and looked at his nana, a small smile on her face.
She nodded at him encouragingly, and he let out a breath and continued, "And it's a book I deeply love. But I'm reading it slowly now. So, the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. It's where everything else is that I didn't even know existed. As much as I want to, I can't live without that book any more."
Suddenly, Nana Piastri smiled wide, "That is how I know you changed for the better. The way you talk about her."

Oscar found himself outside her door. He let out a breath and knocked, he didn't have anything in mind or anything planned. He wanted to see her.
It didn't last a minute before she opened the door. What he didn't expect was for her to be ready to go out. He stopped, blinked, as he took her in. She wasn't dressed up, she was wearing a shirt and jeans, but it was her smile, her excited eyes that really got him.
He didn't realize he was staring until Olivia hit his arm. "OW! Why do you love hitting me?" he asked. She huffed and crossed her arms, "I have been calling you at least a minute and you're just standing there." She said.
The driver chuckled, "Where you off to?" She furrowed her eyebrows, "How did you- nevermind. I'm off to find wildflowers." She said excitedly. He raised an eyebrow at her, "Wildflowers?"
"Yeah!" she said as she nodded, "I need them for a project. It's nature week and I don't want to paint just flowers." She said. He hummed and nodded, "Well, do you need company?"
Without saying anything, Olivia locked her door and pulled Oscar out the building. She brought him to her favorite field. The shade was amazing and she would stay there for hours.
Oscar watched her, she sat down as she started to pick some flowers. He walked closer to her, just enough to catch her attention, when all of a sudden he froze. His body rigid in fear.
Olivia looked at him in worry. She stood up, "Oscar?" she asked and walked slowly, "Are you okay?" she asked again. But when she got closer, she turned to his right for her to see something landed on his back.
"Oh! There's a butterfly on you Oscar!"
"I know."
She raised an eyebrow and walked to face him, "You okay?" she asked as she chuckled. "Can you-can you swish it away?" he asked quietly. Her raised eyebrow moved to furrow with the other, "You want me to swish it away? The butterfly?" she asked.
He nodded and gulped, she hummed and walked to him but unlike what he wanted her to do, she placed her hand on his back, close to the butterfly. She waited until the little bug was ready.
And like it always happened, the butterfly moved to her hand. She chuckled and moved slightly away from Oscar. He let out a relieved breath and stood back up, he looked at her and stared at the bug that was on her hand.
"Oscar..." she called out and he looked at her. "Sorry, I just. I'm not fond of them." He said, eyeing the butterfly again. She smiled at him and tilted his head, "Well how will this work?" she asked.
He furrowed his eyebrows at her, "What do you mean?" he asked. She chuckled, "I mean, you're scared of butterflies and I adore them." She said and pushed her hand up making it fly off.
The two of them watched as it flapped its wings and flew around them before going off. She smiled at it and her eyes showed so much brightness, Oscar felt his lips smile.
"There's something about butterflies when I was a child. They were always around me. Even when I was born, my mum said there was one by the window, every birthday, celebration, there was one. It's like a sign, that whenever I'll be happy or be a memory, one will be there."
Oscar felt his heart melt. For him it was fear, for her it was a sign.
She looked at him and smiled, "One showed up today Oscar. With you."
"Liv..."
"It's either you'll be happy, or I'll be a memory."
