Alice was still in the Intensive Care Unit. I couldn’t imagine how everything happened so fast. I thought she’ll be fine. I trusted her that she’ll be fine. But she didn’t. She looked unconscious inside the I.C.U. My knees wanted to bend. I didn’t have any strength to gaze at her in that condition. It was breaking me apart.
I turned my head on the other side. Alice’s parents were sitting on the waiting sear near the I.C.U. Her Mom was still weeping while her Dad was trying to console her.
The doctor was still inside the I.C.U. with the nurses. They were assisting Alice. I trust them, they’ll save her. I couldn’t live without her. I don’t want to lose her. She’s my life.
The doctor came out of the room and face Alice’s parents. “Doc?” Michelle moaned.
“In twenty- four hours, if she didn’t have a heart donor, she’ll die. I’m sorry.” That’s all the doctor said and he left. Twenty- four hours? Heart donor? Were they crazy? How could we find a heart donor in twenty- four hours? Ben told me everything about this. All about Alice. But I couldn’t think clearly how the hell we could find a heart donor. When Ben told me about Alice’s condition, all I retorted was, Alice couldn’t be that frail. She’s fine when she left me in France. Then something automatically flashed back on my mind. The day when we were on her cousin’s house and she said she couldn’t breathe. That day when she said I don’t have to worry, that it was just chest pain. I was deceived.
I found her just this day and now I was about to lose her again? Was fate that unfair? Was fate that much tricky? I couldn’t think clearly. It’s getting harder and harder. I glanced at the window of the I.C.U. Alice was still breathing but only because of the machine supporting her. I remained looking at her.
Alice, please don’t leave me. Not in this way.
“She’s still fighting.” I heard a lass’ voice beside me. “I’m Cathy.” She offered me her hand and I shook mine with her. “Yeah, we met a while ago. I’m Matt, again.” I replied.
“Yeah. When you left this evening, she asked me a favor. That was the most creepy and most outrageous favor I ever heard from a patient.” She was still staring at Alice inside the I.C.U. while I was still listening to her. “She asked me to see the morgue.” To my surprise, I twisted my head ad faced her.
“Shocking, right? But I didn’t grant her favor, of course.” She turned her eyes back to Alice. “Matt, she’s still here. Fighting. I know she keep saying that we have to accept her fatal fate, but I know deep inside her she still wants to be with you. With you and with her family. That’s why she’s still here. Matt, you have to be with her side. She needs you.” I waggled and watched her walking away from me. I couldn’t believe what Cathy said. Alice asked her to see the morgue? Was that how she really set herself? That was something I never expect from Alice.
