Excerpt:
"It's about time you took a vacation," mother sighs, her eyes glittering victoriously as she gives a smug smile. Like the cat that got the cream.
"Some of us work for a living- it's not like I'm granted bonus vacations or pay raises," I remark simply while slamming the trunk of my car.
"I really wish you'd get rid of that thing- I don't know why your father liked it so much," she sighs, running a manicured nail down the fine line of my 69 mustang, passed down from my grandfather, to father, to me. While intended for the next born son, my dad was blessed with only one daughter.
"I like my car," I stare at her bright green eyes, blond hair curled expertly and placed in an effortless ponytail, matching her pristine exterior. "What's this one's name?" The angelic expression falls to be replaced by a devil's glare.
"Chris, I've told you this- you know maybe if you've taken more time off you'd know Chris by now. He's a wonderful man, and has two lovely kids; Andrea and Daniel. Of course, you'd know more if you cared enough to call once in a while," she places her hand over her chest as a man makes his appearance on the front porch of the rental country cabin the family had booked for my vacation time. How lovely.
"I can't call out sick every other day to come entertain you," my words fall on deaf ears as she showcases her megawatt smile to Chris as he walks down the steps towards us. Mother turns to wrap her arms around him in a hug.
"Dear! Look, Kasey finally arrived," she hums, kissing his chin in an overly sweet and loving manner. Chris offers me a smile before he kisses his newly minted wife.
"Kasey, I've heard a lot about you, glad you could put in for a vacation," Chris laughs softly, offering me his hand in greeting.
"Hopefully it's mostly good things," I joked with him lightly. There's no telling as to what kinds of stories she has told them about me. All interesting ones I'm sure.
"All of them truthful, you have always been a wild soul," she waves her hand towards my weapon with disdain. "Is there some place you keep that thing? You know I'm not a fan of those killers," she shivers with a hand over her chest.
"I can't leave my weapon unsupervised," I state, wanting to hit my head against a wooden beam. This is an argument we've covered multiple times over and she still refuses to hear anything I say on the matter. "Guns aren't killers, it's the people that wield them."
"Honey this is a hunting cabin, we have rifles here, a pistol isn't much different," he chuckles softly wrapping his arm around her shoulder for a single arm hug.
"A hunting rifle isn't used on people," she shakes her head. I wouldn't be too sure on that one mother.
"If you want to be nit picky- it's the bullet I'd worry about. Besides, it's not like you can reuse them," her eyes widen as she stares at me with a mixture of shocked horror. Chris laughs, shaking his head amused.
"That's a new one, I haven't heard that one before,"
