Excerpt:

Looking away I'm met with eerie fierce white glowing eyes. Pausing as I pull another arrow, equipping it to my bow. That's a coyote. The smell of a fresh kill no doubt having drawn their attention, looking away I check for any other eyes. A high-pitched bark forces me to look back at the biggest threat. The coyote moves out of the woods, stepping into the clearing crouched as he snarls at me. Taking a deep breath, I steady my aim tracking the creature, I don't think I'm going to be hanging around much longer.

Exhaling slowly, I release the arrow watching as it zings through the air once more. The coyote yips, flinching from the pain only to increase it's pace. Grabbing another arrow I repeat, letting the arrow fly through the air, hitting my target once more. My heart pounds as the coyote grows near. Making a last ditch effort I pull my hatchet from my belt, raising my arm before I throw it. I wince as my hatchet buries itself into the coyotes head. The coyote let's out a soft whimper, before slipping from this life.

Leaning away from the still form I take a slow breath. That was too close for comfort. Letting out a soft breath, I move towards the animal, retrieving my weapons. Looking back at the cave I can only pray that this is enough to satisfy whatever lives within its confines. Sighing, I look away from the coyote, my stomach becoming queasy with the results of the hatchet. The sight is not pretty, or even appealing in any way. Glancing towards the cave, Papa always said to leave the offering at the mouth of the cave, make it known.

You respect the environment, or something along those lines. Grabbing the hind legs I drag the coyote towards the cave. I'm happy that this trip wasn't a complete fail. I pray that I can make it back to the house without another encounter with a coyote. I don't think I could manage to do that again. Shaking my head, I continue to pull the coyote closer to the cave. An eerie feeling settles over the meadow, making me look around nervous for what changed. Dropping the legs, my body freezes as I hear a slight growling emit from the cave.

The sound isn't like anything I've ever heard before, staring into the darkness I force myself to move away. I don't want to find out what makes that kind of noise, the slight growl is deep and threatening. Like I just woke up whatever animal takes shelter within. Moving back to my perch I pick up my bow and rabbit rushing away from the opening. With the sounds moving closer to the front I glance back one more time, seeing a large cloud of steam. Like a large animal about to make it's exit. Staring in awe I watch as the coyote is dragged in quickly.

Turning I make the long walk home at a run, not wanting to have a face to face meeting with whatever that was.
