I knocked on the door of the room shared by Sam and I, still smiling from ear-to-ear.
"What's up, dude? You look like you just won the lottery!" he said, raising an eyebrow.
"Ah, ani. Just met a really unexpected person," I said, clearing my throat. (Nothing)
"Sus..." he said, and went back to doing his own work.
I kicked off my shoes and put on my hoodie, climbing onto the bed. I unlocked my phone and called Omma. It rang about 5-6 times before she picked up.
"Yeoboseyo, Omma. Nae, eottoke jineyo?" I said. (Hello, mum. Yes, how are you?)
"Nae aduera, nega bogo shipda. Eonjaejjeum jipae osil geongayo?" she asked. (My son, I miss you. When will you come home?)
"Omma, sigan jum juseyo. Jigumeun goajega manheyo," I informed. (Mum, give me some time. I have a lot of assignments at the moment.)
"Nae, arayo. Yeoyuleul gajgo anjeonhake jineseyo," she told me. (Yes, I know. Take your time and stay safe.)
"Nae Omma, dangsindo yeogsi," I said. (Yes mum, you too.)
"Joha, bbali jageola, nae adeul," she said abruptly. (Alright, go to sleep soon, my son.)
"Nae Omma," I said. (Yes mum)
"Jalja, nae adeul," she said. (Goodnight, my son.)
"Anyeonghi jumuseyo, Omma," I said. (Sleep well, mum.)
I hung up.
I hadn't meant for the call to be this short, but Omma seemed to be in a hurry. I hoped that everything was okay.
"Hae-jun, Omma gwenchana?" Sam asked. (Is your mum okay?)
"Nae, keureomyeon. You up for some gaming?" I replied as if I had no care in the world. (Yes, of course)
"Keure.", he agreed. (Sure)
...
The next morning in the cafeteria, I spotted Hae-Ri sitting at a table diagonally across me with a couple of people. I subtly waved at her, not sure if she would see me, but she did. She smiled, and waved back. The girl who was sitting directly across her, turned back and saw me, too. She had short, wavy blonde hair, and was fair but a bit tanned, too. I thought I'd seen her before.
"Nuguya?" Sam asked. (Who's that)
"Nobody," I said immediately. I didn't want to have to explain the entire Gochujang accident along with the previous day's "reunion".
"It is somebody. Whenyeol, she isn't your girlfriend, is she?" he said, getting hyped up, "You promised me that we would both go through single-hood together! You broke our bro-code." (No way)
"Ya! Mitcheosseo?? Yeojachingu aniya, I've only talked to her a couple of times. Besides, I don't remember promising you anything, you just made a lot of unnecessary assumptions, you know that too," I snapped. (Are you crazy?? She's not my girlfriend)
"Oh, jinja? Daebak! Jinja daebak," Sam said sarcastically. (Oh, really? Amazing. Really amazing.)
"Hmm," I nodded, "I'm going for class, see you later."
I picked up my backpack and left. Sometimes Sam really drove me insane with his questions.
