"dazai, atsushi, our new mission just came in," kunikida called out the two of them, waving a manila folder in front of them. "there's been reports of a strange looking child frequenting a florist a few streets down, and customers have observed that flowers that had been long extinct started reappearing in that shop."
"but kunikida-kun, i'm too busy napping to go with you guys!"
"napping people don't talk."
"there was even a flower bed that sprouted near the shop overnight..." atsushi points out, flipping through the documents. "is it the work of an ability user?"
"they're not sure, apparently," dazai cocks his head to the side, as if listening in on a different conversation through his other ear. "there was no registration of an ability user with a plant related ability that matched the features of the child in the government files. perhaps they're a foreigner."
there were several blurry photographs attached to the papers, displaying the features of said child. their hair appeared to be a shade of white and they had light green eyes, as well as a pair of elf ears that stood out against the rest of her appearance. they looked young, almost too young to pose any sort of danger to the civilians.
"either way, we're going over to the florist now. we should probably ask some questions while we can," kunikida flips the folder close, and atsushi stands from his desk to join him. kunikida grabs dazai roughly by the back of his trenchcoat, dragging him to the door.
dazai stretches his arms above his head, letting out a breath. that florist was the one he had picked out for them because of the nice old lady who ran the shop. to think that they were discovered so quickly...

the taxi rumbles to a stop, and the three detectives get out of the car. their vision is immediately greeted by the field of blue flowers covering every inch of the ground, seemingly climbing over the concrete and taking over the scenery.
"what flowers are these?" atsushi asks, bending down to take a closer look. he reaches a hand out to brush over the petals, but kunikida stops him, warning him that they might be dangerous.
"blue moon weed." the two of them startle, turning to look at their third companion. "it's safe to touch," dazai adds, bending to pluck one himself.
after admiring the flowers, the three of them continue on their way to the florist. the shop is a small old building that was well known for producing beautiful flowers, as well as the kind old lady that runs the shop. the outside had displays of various flower pots containing different types of flora, from the common red roses to flowers they had never seen before. the addition of the blue moon weed field simply added to the colour of the landscape, and provided a delightful fragrance.
kunikida pushes the door open lightly, bowing his head and leading the other two into the quaint little shop.
"good morning, is sato-san around?" his voice cuts through the almost-silence of the shop, pausing the gentle sounds of a broom sweeping.
the only figure present turns, and atsushi freezes.
white hair. green eyes. elf ears.
they were wearing an apron over their clothes, and the broom in their hands looked more like a weapon than cleaning equipment.
"can i be of as...assistance...?"
their voice trailed off, and their eyelids drooped slightly. swaying, their arms bring the broom to lean against the shelve next to them, while they stagger towards the three detectives. atsushi flinches at the sudden change in distance, while kunikida narrows his eyebrows, bringing his hand to the inside of his coat pocket, fingers brushing against the cover of his notebook.
suddenly, the swish of a cloak alerts atsushi's senses, and he snaps his head to dazai, who had been standing right next to him. the white haired boy reaches his hand out to pull dazai back, but he had already made his way to the front of the group.
holding his arms out, the man only watches as the child curls their arms around his waist, burying their face into his chest. their legs latch onto him like a koala, and dazai huffs as he lifts them up into his embrace.
kunikida observes the whole scenario quietly. the dazai he knew always claimed to be bad with children, so who was this man that was gently patting the child's head as they dozed off in his arms?
"wait, dazai-san, what's going on?" atsushi asks quietly, hand still outstretched.
"they're sleeping. that's it," dazai replies softly, turning to face them. "we'll bring them back to the agency. i've already let sato-san know in advance."
"wait, since when did you–" kunikida is cut off by the brown haired man already walking towards the door. he expertly swings it open with his foot, stepping out of the shop and back into the field of blue flowers.
kunikida runs off to chase after him, while atsushi takes another look at the shop. it's silent, with pots of flowers and plants covering every inch of the shelves. turning back, he walks out the door, flipping the sign to show that the shop was closed.
what a strange day this was.
