You've read that right!
VChesterG is a Filipino author who writes a variety of books that range from mystery to romance. He does a great job writing unpredictable plotlines and flawed characters. I highly recommend you go check him out if you speak Filipino.
Also, there will be some spoilers ahead and mentioning triggering themes such as suicide, bullying, teen angst and violence so you've been warned.
The plot starts off Agatha Mendoza, a famous author renowned as "The JK Rowling of the Philippines," who one day jumped off the school building to her death. This leaves Caith Martinez, her only best friend, feeling all alone.
In fact, she is more than alone as she found out that her friend has been receiving these death threats for a long time. Let me tell you that once you started reading, you can never put this down. You simply wanna learn more and see how things go. So, Caith tries to solve the case despite being warned not to.
It is later revealed that the group of classmates who have been bullying Agatha used to be her best friends. They were once considered The Dream Team who have been together for a long time.
It is quite heartbreaking to see how a simple miscommunication was able to obliterate their friendship. It doesn't help that everyone of them is dealing with their own demons - with family and relationship issues being prevalent.
I remember this Stephanie girl who was straight-up mean to Agatha because she happened to witness her best friend kissing her boyfriend in the past (which unknown to her, Agatha was being set up to do this).
You think we're done? Ohnonono! The one responsible for all this was the quiet girl name Vanessa, who was also once friends with Agatha and turns out to be a deranged psychopath who has been sending her those death threats. All I could think about was "Geez! These kids totally need serious help."
The story somehow resonated with me. Growing up, I am the type of kid who struggled to keep friends. I was either too quick to make friends or difficult to be around. It is sad to say that not everyone is well-equipped to hear you out and give you time to realize when you messed up.
Unfortunately nowadays, people are so unpredictable that they are willing to ruin your life, deprive you of career opportunities and kill you instead of trying to work things out with you.
This book teaches you to choose your friends wisely and how important communication is in every relationship.
If you or someone else is having a mental crisis, don't be afraid to reach out for help.
