I followed the young woman down the spiral staircase, careful not to trip over my feet in these heels. The stairs were decorated with lights all the way down. I heard a few people conversing as I descended into the foyer the size of a ballroom where I would be for the rest of the night.

My eyes locked with Barry, Jacob's business partner. He smiled as he walked over to me.

"Charlotte, you clean up well," He pointed out, scanning his eyes across me.

"As do you," I shot back, almost offended. I knew I looked completely different than I do at work, but that doesn't mean he gets to point that out.

"Hey now, I'm supposed to be Hades. Jacob knew I'd have too much fun causing trouble," He said swinging his two-pronged pitchfork towards my neck.

"Barry, relax," Jacob said coming from the top of the steps. His wings swaying side to side with each step down. His white attire almost angel like as he floated to me, saving me from Barry's bad jokes. Silver glitter lined his eyelids and black liner was smudged just below his waterline. He looked absolutely ethereal standing next to me. "Ignore him."

"I was planning on it," I rebuttled, still not taking my eyes off his angelic aura.

"Well done guys. The place looks stunning," Jacob applauded looking around at everyone dressed in all black. I didn't notice how many people were standing around placing last touches on decor until now. Suddenly a pit rose in my stomach as I looked like one of the guests than the workers.

They weren't maids, they were the event staff.

"Mr. Elordi, can I speak with you?" I quietly asked. "Privately."

"Please call me Jacob. But of course. I've got something to show you anyway. Follow me," He placed a hand on my bare shoulder, guiding me into the sunroom by the front door. "Wait right here."

"Wait—" I tried to get out before he walked out of the room.

My heart was pounding. Confrontation isn't really my strong suit, but I need to know what part I have in this event.

"I had this made for you," Jacob announced as he walked back into the room holding a box. He placed it in my hands waiting for me to open it.

My hands removed the top revealing a headpiece. Crystals lined the large sunflower shape that wrapped around the headband. Each petal looked handmade. It was absolutely stunning and quite heavy. My brows furrowed.

"What am I doing here? I saw all those people out there in black. I wasn't told I needed that uniform," I asked still holding the box.

"Charlotte, if you haven't already figured it out, you're not working tonight," Jacob smirked, his dimples creasing.

"But I-"

"Don't worry. You'll be getting double of what you make Friday nights with me at the restaurant. I assume you didn't read the letter I left upstairs?" A grin exploded across his face. I completely forgot about the envelope. I was too engrossed in having champagne in the shower to bother.
